Mechanical Puzzle Box with 2 step Verification | Secret Box | Trick Box

puzzle box (also called a secret box or trick box) is a box that can be opened only by solving a puzzle. Some require only a simple move and others a series of discoveries. This Puzzle box is a combination of 2 methods of trick. Hence you need to figure out the trick to open this Ultimate Puzzle Box.

Modern puzzle boxes developed from furniture and jewelry boxes with secret compartments and hidden openings. Our Puzzle box is a single compartment box with 2 combination lock mechanism.

A puzzle box can be used for entertainment, brain storming or for hiding precious or luxury items that should not be accessed by anyone easily.

Here, we made our puzzle box with MDF boards mainly to demonstrate. Also wood, metal and acrylic is been used for few other parts.

Making the Frame Box

The box is mainly made of MDF board, here we marked and cut all the box sides. Then joined with super glue.

For the cutting, here we used Band saw, hacksaw and scroll saw for different parts and difficulty. But you cna use any saw according to your condition.

Also super glue is a very strong glue for joining Mdf boards.

The pictures in all the steps will guide you better than the texts.

Giving Add on to Frame Box

Here, we cut some Mdf strips to add all over the outer sides of the frame box to have some design look later on.

Making Front Lock Spacing & Holder

The box is a combination of 2 lock mechanism. One is in the front side and another is on the top side.

Here we made an arch hole for the circle lock plate pin to move on and gear plate to move on.

Making Wooden Pillars for the Box

Here, we made some pillar like design to setup all over our box sides. This are not part of puzzle but as a decoration or to confuse as a puzzle part.

Making More Pillar Design

Making Handle Design for Both Side

So, here we add two handle on both the sides. These are also made same design like pillars. Handle rests are made with wood and copper wires are used for the handles.

Here, we fixed all the pillars and handles to the box.

Making the Front Lock Gears

For the front lock mechanism, we made a gear system. When the front plates were rotated slightly the inside gear will push and pull the bars to work the locking mechanism.

Making the Front Lock Pallets

Here we made a flower petal like design for moving the front lock gears. Here are 2 different petals moving 2 different gear bars. One is directly connected to the central dowel bar and another is connected to the pin attached to the bigger petal.

To work the lock mechanism this is the inside view. Here are the locking bars, having some metal wires bend and fixed to the ends. so that on pushing it gets stuck the the other lock pin.

This is the lock pin that we attached to the top cover plate so that it gets locked in with the front locking mechanism.

Main Locking Chamber Part - I (chamber Covers)

The main locking chamber or you can say the puzzle chamber is situated with the top cover plate. This is a combination of 9 ring plates that we need to rotate in a certain order that it releases the central ring to rotate freely. Thus a gear will be used to open and clock the top cover with a lid.

In the below steps this mechanism is simply elaborated through pictures.

Here I just made the required plates and structures that will hold our puzzle pieces or to work properly.

These ring plates are most important 9 pieces of the puzzle. These are cut in a very specific way so that only one ring can be rotated at a time and in a order.

Here, is the central part that will open and close the puzzle lid so that the top cover can be open or close.

This is just the different that will hold the gear and mechanism parts.

We made several holes to fit our nuts for every section and layer of the puzzle parts.

For rotating the main 9 ring plates form outside of the chamber here we made 9 handle like pieces with wood. These will used to rotate and solve our puzzle.

Also we have added some marks on the handles so that a specific position can be remembered for opening and closing.

To hold our ring plates and gears here we made some dowels of two different sizes and shapes with bamboo and dry tree branch sticks.

Here all our puzzle pieces are ready now to add to the holding plates.

Here, at the back most part we used an acrylic piece to cover up and screw. So that our gear mechanism stays visible and gives an extra classy look.

Then we fitted all our puzzle pieces and cover each plates and screwed up.

Adding Front Handle to Top Cover

Also, we added a small handle made with copper wire to the front. It is now pretty handy to open the top lid directly.

Next, we made two hinge assembly designed like the pillars and added to the back of the box glued with the top plate.

Adding Extra Decorations to the Box

Lastly, we added some decorative strip patterns to the side and back of the box.

Adding Bottom Cover With Foot Pads

Here we cut a pieces of same size and added 4 foot pads to the corners made with Mdf and glued to the bottom of the puzzle box.

Finishing the Top Cover Plate

Lastly, we colored our silver nuts to golden as it will match the entire color scenario and screwed all over.

Then we finally added our top plate and some other optional designs and at the end we applied varnish coating all over the box to give it a shiny and enhancing look.
