TwoPiece

Rectangular two-piece boxes have a top that slides over the bottom to close securely. They are inspired by ancient containers like Greek pyxides and were used for holding items like makeupand jewelry. The rectangular shape is a modern twist, and the design works well without any locks. These boxes are simple and elegant, making them great for gifts or storage.

The supplies you would need to make a TwoPiece box is

  1. 11.8" x 11.8" in piece of 1/8 baltic birch plywood (Any woodwork)
  2. Wood glue
  3. A laser-cutting machine
  4. computer (or laptop)

Box Dimensions

To adjust the dimensions of my box, I went to festi.boxes.py and selected the TwoPiece box option. I needed to change its size and the number of lugs or locks I needed to fit in the 11.8 x 11.8 square.

The "diameter" refers to the measurement of each ring of the box in millimeters, which will later be stacked to assemble the box.

The "lugs" indicate the number of locking mechanisms you want on the box.

The "Alignment pins" are small reference circles whose diameter can be specified to ensure precise stacking of the pieces.

The "thickness" shows how thick each ring should be.

It's best to leave default settings unchanged. To experiment with my configurations, I entered the size I wanted and clicked "generate" to show the box's appearance. Once satisfied with my settings, I clicked "download" to finalize them.

1. Open Retina Engrave.

2. Click "software," then "Try now."

3. Check the top left; if it says "muse-core," change it to "muse-titan."

4. Click the image icon in the top left and upload your file from festi.boxes.py.

5. Select everything that appears and click the "ungroup" icon (two squares)

near the top right.

6. Move each piece. Copy and paste pieces to fill as many as possible on an

11.8x11.8 inch wood board.

7. To check if it fits, draw a square, set x and y to 11.8, and see if it fits. Delete

the circle when done.

Set up your laser cutter by adjusting the speed and power. Power is how strong the laser is (keep it at 100). Speed affects how deep the cut is; slower means deeper and faster means shallower. If your box has designs, create a separate setting for them. Use a USB to transfer the file to the machine, adjust settings if needed, let the machine scan the board, and start cutting.

To make the bottom half:

  1. Find the pieces of the bottom half
  2. Put glue onto the sides of the pieces
  3. Connect them all together
  4. Allow the box to dry for at least 24 hours

To make the other half

  1. Get the remaining pieces of the other half
  2. Put glue onto the sides of the pieces
  3. Connect them one by one
  4. Allow the box to dry for at least 24 hours before using it.

Finally, I had to smooth out the corners by rubbing them with something rough, like sandpaper, to make it easier to put them together and take them back out.
