Two Storied Secret Box From a Single Piece of Paper

The painted box that you can see there in the picture was actually made by me at least five years ago! Back then, I had no idea about Instructables. Recently, the Box contest made me go back and make a replica of the box, the white one beside it. Moreover, I think it'll be fun to make this simple box.

Now, this is a box has two chambers, one inner chamber below with an outer chamber above it. The whole box is made from a single piece of paper, which basically means you're not going to join two pieces. What happens when you join two separate pieces? Nothing serious, it only reduces the strength of the box.

Make the Sketch on a Paper

The first and the most important part of this I'ble is to make the sketch. It's better if you choose a thick paper or a card board for this. You can use the used-up chart papers or something similar for a trial as I did.

I've added a picture the sketch I did. All the big squares are 5 mm x 5 mm and the wings have a width of 1mm. The top square is 2 mm x 2 mm.

I've also named the boxes according to their orientation:

T - Top
B- Bottom
S - Side

The small ridge that you can see between an S and a T box is basically the slot where the small square will get into

Cut Out the Shape

Once you've made the sketch, the rest of the steps will be very simple.

First, you need to cut out the shape. Tips for cutting it out? Cut straight squares first and then work out the details. Cutting the curved shape of the wings might be a hectic task for some kids.

Fold the Paper Accordingly and Glue the Parts

  • Now, fold the paper across all the lines you've drawn. Yes, ALL.
  • Now stick the two wings beside the B - square with the top and bottom S - squares. Make sure the wings are on the inner side so that it gets a better look.
  • Now fold the remaining part of the paper like an "M" and put it inside the box
  • Cut the side to make a slot

Some Advanced Finishing (optional)

The box I made earlier also had this special cut (looks like a semi circle) which helps one to lift the cover and discover the inner shelf easily. This cut was easy to make on this hard cardboard. Once you 're familiar with this simple box, you can definitely try this one out. Also, you can paint it and make it quite presentable.

So what are you waiting for? Put your secret notes inside it. Hurry!!!
