Tutu dress are simple to make and very elegant. It was my biggest desire to make tutu dress for my niece. She is going to be 3 soon. My tutorial on crochet dress would require basic knowledge of crocheting.

This pretty dress would be so adorable for flower girls or a party. The entire dress is made of strips of tulle fabric. The tulle is cut into strips which are added to form the skirt part.

There is nothing more girly than a fluffy tutu. I'm yet to gift it to her and waiting to see that big smile on her face.

So here I begin my journey of how I made my first Tutu dress.

Shell Stitch Bodice

I have done the tutu dress top in shell stitch. I have used the basic shell stitch pattern.

I am making the dress for a 3 year old. So the chest circumference is 20 inches.

Hence chain till you reach about 20 inches. Keep care that your chain is multiple of 6+1.

Bodice 2

Row 1: 2 dc in 4th ch from hook, *sk 2 sts, 1 sc in the next st, sk 2 sts, 5 dc in next st** Repeat from * to ** until there are 3 sts remaining, sk 2 sts, sc in last st, turn.

Row 2: Ch 3, 2 dc in the first st (sc from previous row), *sk 2 sts, sc in next st, sk 2 sts, 5 dc into the next st (sc from previous row)** Repeat from * to ** across, sc in the t-ch, turn.

Repeat row 2 till you have reached the height of the bodice needed.

Loops

After you have made the bodice, make loops to fit in you tulle.

For this, turn your work and chain 3. Sl St onto the 3rd DC of the shell stitch. Again *Ch3, Sl St onto the 3rd DC of the shell stitch.* till the end of the row.

Cut Tutu Tulle

The entire dress is made of strips of fabric. The tulle is cut into strips which are added to form the skirt part.

Cut the tulle in lengths that you like. It’s rolled up 6 inch wide which is perfect for tutus. Then I cut the strips 30 inch long since it’ll be folded in half and become a 15 inch tutu.

Insert Tulle

IMG_20160606_083645925_wm.jpg

Fold a tulle strip in half, and push the hoop part through a loop made with crochet. Pull the other end of the tulle through the loop to make a easy knot, pull it tight.

Do 2 tulles per loop. This would be good to give a fluffy look for your tutu dress.

I have gone for a shaded tulle. You can arrange the tulles in the loop the way you want your dress to turn out.

Do the same for the entire dress.

Tutu Dress Straps.

Now for the sleeves. Fold the bodice so both the ends meet at the middle. Mark where your straps should come.

I have given a shell stitch strap. Kindly look into the shell stitch described in the first section. Instead of going sideways go in a line. Thus continue the shell stitch till you reach the length of the straps needed. Sl stitch on the other side of the dress.

Embelishment

You can make your dress more pretty by adding crochet flowers, ribbons or waist crochet bands. There are so many options out there. Bring together the back of the dress using buttons or ribbons. Sew the buttons on.

I have made crochet simple 5 petal flowers. Added few pearls for the flowers.

Another crochet shell stitch band around the waist.

All set to adorn it on your little girl.
