Turntable for Cakes

I wanted to make something for my wife which enables her to cook and bake more for me. Turntable was in her wish list, for sometime.. Turntables that available online were fragile and made of poor material.

So decided to make one.. In this instructable, I will share how I made one

Features

• 6" height
• 11" diameter plate
• Stable for heavy weights

Material

• Plywood with thickness 10mm or 0.39 inches
• Lady Susan bearing

Tools

• Jigsaw
• Hammer
• Fevicol / PVA glue
• Fine/thin nails
• Black spray Paint

To cut Circle, I am sharing how to make a jig

To cut circle we need a jig,

• On a 4" x 11" plywood
  
  • Drill 6 holes separated by 1" starting from on edge
  • On the other edge fix a U shaped plywood so that it fits the jig tight and does not move
• To cut the circle
  • fix a screw on the target plywood
  • Fix the jig on it at desired radius
  • Drill a large hole to insert the jigsaw blade
  • While cutting th circle, do not rush. let the jigsaw cut and then move forward
  • Keep monitoring if the blade is getting too hot
  • Pause in between when needed

Cut plywood

• One circle with diameter 11"
• One circle with diameter 9"
• 5" x 5 " square - 4 numbers

Base

• Make a box using 4 (5" x 5') squares as shown
• Use PVA glue and thin nails
• Fix the small circle on this

Top

• We will use it as is
• Remember to mark center

I have had initially used a bearing from my son's fidget spinner, but was not good

I decided to paint it, you can skip this

• Sand all edges and joins with sandpaper (80 grit)
• Mix fevicol pva glue with saw dust and fill all gaps or holes on plywood, let it dry for 3 hours
• Now sand with 150 grit followed by 220 grit
• Clean all sawdust and wipe with damp cloth
• Apply light coat of mineral oil and leave it for few hours
• I skipped applying wood primer, because I did not have any left and I apply 3 to 4 coats
• Between each coat light sand using 220 grit sandpaper

If you are applying oil paint using brush, you need to let the paint dry for 20 to 40 hrs. I got bored and got a spray paint, I had to wait only 30 minutes in between

Finally painted it with glossy black spray paint

Lady Susan bearing is key for the turntable to function well.

• Drill holes on the base and the top wood circles
• In the base drill 10mm hole as shown
• Fix screws on the base
• To fix the top use the 10 mm hole we drilled earlier, screw it in place
• using magnetic screwdriver is recommend

Once done. request your wife to do a quality test. Adjust if needed.

And now wait for her to make a rich cake for you....
