Turn a Folding Table Into a Dining Table

DSC_0605.jpg

I was searching online and found a designer table that cost over $3,000 that had legs that looked like a folding table. I wanted to make something similar, but for much less money! I already had sandpaper, stain and paint, so this project only cost around $45 total! Your cost will depend on what supplies you already have.

Even if you are a beginner, this is a project you can do!

STEP 1: Start With a Banquet Folding Table

Garage sales and thrift stores are great places to look for a table like this for cheap.

STEP 2: Paint the Legs

Spray paint the legs. I used Rustoleum Metallic in Flat Soft Iron. The feet are removable, so if you'd like those to me a different color you can remove them and paint. I used 2 different gold craft paint colors to achieve this effect.

STEP 3: Prepare and Attach Boards to the Top

I started with three 1"x12"x8' boards and cut a foot off each one to make a 7-foot table. Cut, sand, and attach boards to each other using a Kreg Jig. There are a lot of different ways you can go about creating and attaching this table top, I'm just going to share what I did.

STEP 4: Add the 1x2s

To make the tabletop appear thicker, flip the top over and attach 1x2s around the perimeter of the 3 large boards. Clamp into place, drill holes using a countersinking bit, then add screws.

STEP 5: Attach Tabletop to Folding Table

Place newly constructed top on the folding table. Attach with Liquid Nails. If you'd like to make it extra sturdy, you can place screws through the folding table into the newly constructed top, as pictured.

STEP 6: Paint or Stain

If you're going to stain, wipe entire tabletop with wood conditioner (follow instructions on the can). Stain or paint the top. This table is a combination of stain and dry brushing.

STEP 7: Add Chairs and Decor
