This is a model of a Turbojet Engine, designed using Fusion 360 and intended to be 3d printed as a scale model. This was created to test the limits of a complex design that I could create. It can be operated using a motor and spin the fan blades to create thrust.

Supplies

  1. 3D Printer
  2. 2 5972K212 Ball Bearings
  3. 3D print or get 2 2600N2 Metal Miter Gear
  4. Filament
  5. M3 and M2 Bolts and nuts, if you want to be fancy, Glue, if not, it will still spin if parts are glued
  6. Small Motor w/ 12mm shaft or adapter
  7. Battery for motor
  8. 12mm diameter shaft or 3d print shaft

Low Pressure Fan Assembly

The low-pressure fan assembly is the first fan stage of the jet engine. It uses the two largest fans, two spaces, and a rotor hub. Assemble it so that a spacer is in front of the first fan, then the fan, another spacer, and then the rotor hub. As mentioned before, it can be assembled using bolts, or you can glue the parts together carefully. Then align it with the low-pressure chamber top and bottom, and attach those parts together.

Intermediate Assembly

For this step, this is the part that attaches to the motor so the shaft turns. Attach the Bevel gear holder to the assembly by aligning it with the flat side of the chamber. One of the bevel gears will sit neatly inside the holder. The other bevel gear will slide into the bearing, but won't be attached yet.

High Pressure Fan Assembly

Similar to the first step, we are going to be assembling the fans again. The parts go in the order of the picture. First is the flange that you insert the bearing from the last step into. Then that attaches to the first fan blade. Then assemble the parts in the order shown in the picture and enclose it between the top and bottom parts of the chamber.

Combustion Assembly

For this step, most of the parts nest inside of each other, so it's quite intuitive how to put them together. Same as the other steps, there is also a turbine with a rotor hub, you attach it the same way and then attach that on top of the combustion chamber. The turbine chamber also just attaches to the combustion chamber. The end piece goes at the end of the entire assembly, attached to the rotor hub.

Complete Assembly

The only thing left is to slide the shaft through the pieces and then connect all of the seperate chambers together.

Running It

To run the jet engine, you can use a 12v motor attached to a battery and then stick the shaft into the intermediate chamber and turn the motor on. With fuel, you could create a self-sustaining jet engine, but in this case, the plastic would melt.
