Hello instructables,

Recently I had some automotive parts laying around the shop and decided to make a lamp out of a spare turbocharger and a automotive air filter. I have had alot of positive feedback from car lovers and mechanics so I figured it would be perfect to start making them for friends for there "man caves" and shops.

This is my first instructable so if something is unclear feel free to message me and I will help to the best of my ability.


Materials and Tools

Tools

-Welder

-Wire Strippers

-Soldering Iron

-Die grinder/grinder

-Wrenches (Size will vary depending on type of turbo you use)

-Measuring tape

Please use the proper safety precautions while using the above.

Materials

-Turbocharger

-Automotive air filter

- Candelabra base socket (link below)

-6 Inches of flat bar steel

-2 inch washer

-1 foot of 3/4 inch steel tube

-Heat shrink

Making the Base

First you will need to cut a 1 foot 3/4 inch piece of steel tube. Once you have the 1 foot piece of steel cut you will need to notch a groove on each end for the lamp cable to go through. After you have your 1 foot tube cut and notched you will need to weld it to the base of the Turbo, bottom notch facing you and the top notch facing away from you.

Welding the Cartridge to the Base

For the next step the size of your bolt is going to vary depending on the model of the turbo. You are going to need to find a bolt to thread into the inlet or outlet, there are two outlets on a cartridge. Once you have the bolt threaded in you are going to want to cut it so it sticks out half a inch past the back plate (aluminum circle right above the bolt) or how ever much needed depending on the model of the turbo you have.

Now your going to want to weld the cartridge to the 1 foot steel tube, depending on how large your components are you are going to want to divide the 1 foot steel tube into 3 measurements 4,8,12 inches for a ruff estimate because you will need to weld two more items on the steel tube after this step. As you can see mine is closer to the 5 inch mark because it is just a ruff guideline on where to weld the items.

Compressor Housing Mount

For the compressor cover mount you will use the turbo's original bolts and clamp that it came with. Get a small piece of metal it doesn't matter the size or shape it just has to act as a tab for the clamp to sit on. Weld the tab on to the clamp and then weld it at the 8 inch mark on the 1 foot steel tube.

Air Filter Shade Mount

You are going to want to cut three 2 inch flat bar pieces of steel and weld them to the 3 inch washer and then weld it to the very top of the steel tube so it hangs over the base.

Painting

The easiest step of them all, tape off the areas you don't want flat black spray paint on and then spray away.

Mounting the compressor cover

Get the proper wrench size and tighten the compressor cover down on the clamp.

Wiring

You are going to get your 6 ft candelabra base and take it apart because the socket will not fit up the steel tube, even if it could the switch part would hit the base before it made it up to the washer. Take it apart and make it so the switch is a foot and a half away from the socket when you rebuild it so it can reach the washer where it will sit with the light bulb in it.

Put a light bulb in the socket and put the filter over it and its done!
