Tulipwood Bowl

I've been using my lathe for around 2 years now and I think this bowl is pretty neat!

Here's how I made it

Supplies

What I used:

-A lathe

-Some wood (preferably hard wood)

-Chisels

-Bees wax or a Stainer

-Abrasive paper

Pretty simple stuff!

Getting Started

To start off with fix the wood to the base and hoping its round, Fire away!

Selected Shape for Your Bowl

Your bowl should be dug in quite a bit given its not a dish. Ide recommend you get it as very smooth as possible as this will make sanding an ease. Make sure your tools are as sharp as possible, I can stress enough how much this helps! Just a few minutes of sharpening can go along way.

Sanding Smooth

Your bowl should be as smooth as glass! Well not really, So lets get sanding! sand with a low grit and progressively move higher to a smooth state. Just a heads up that the higher the number, the smoother the wood can get (don't go straight to a high number, it will take hours).

Polishing and Finishing

All sanded? Nice!

Lets get polishing with your choice of finish! This is pretty easy and a technique I've tried is by far my favourite. Before I say this is a method I use with beeswax and haven't the if it will work with any other finish... Sorry! Think of the wood as a human, don't just push the beeswax down the wood's throat but slowly let it take it from you. Don't push it in but slowly let it slide on with a little bit of touch.

All Done

Given all steps have been followed it should look a bit like mine!

Well done, you've made a bowl
