Treats for Our Beagles
We have had dogs as pets since we moved to our first home about 46 years ago. Here is a photo of our 2 beagles. Briscoe, on the left, is 8. He was a give away and we have had him for almost one year. He follows me and stays wherever I am most of the time. Daisy is on the right and she is about 11 years old. We got her from a foster family about 3 years ago. She had been in a high kill shelter in South Carolina and ended up here in Maryland. She won't let my husband out of her site. Both are very sweet, loving members of our family and we enjoy spoiling them!
When I saw the Pets Challenge, I knew I wanted to make our sweet doggies some special treats. Here is the recipe I decided to make for Apple, Peanut Butter & Oat Dog Treats! This is how you can make them too!
Supplies Needed
medium mixing bowl
rolling pin
small cookie spatula
rubber scraper
sharp knife
shredder
cookie cutters
2 baking sheets
Ingredients
I had all of these on hand:
1 cup quick cooking oats
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1/4 cup creamy peanut butter
1 large egg
2 apples (I used small Gala apples)
Start Peeling
Preheat your oven to 300 F.
Peel your apples with a sharp knife or a peeler.
Time to Cut
Cut each of the apples into quarters.
Now Core
Using a sharp knife, core each quarter.
Shred the Apples
I have a fun gadget! It's a hand cranking shredder with 3 different shredding attachments. It makes shredding so quick and easy! If you don't have one, any shredder will do. Most people have a box grater.
Using whichever kind you have, shred the apples.
Into the Bowl
Place the oats, flour, peanut butter, egg and shredded apples into your mixing bowl.
Stir It Up!
Stir the ingredients until well combined.
Flour the Surface
Flour your work surface and the rolling pin.
Let's Roll!
Sprinkle a little flour over the dough. Roll it out, until the dough is approximately 1/2 inch thick.
Cutting the Treats
I have many cookie cutters. I chose a bone shape and a star shape.
Dip your cookie cutters in a little flour so that the dough doesn't stick to them. Use them to press and cut through the dough. Place the cut outs onto your baking sheets.
Re-roll the Dough
Gather up the remaining scraps of dough and roll it out again.
Press and cut more treats.
Roll out the scraps again until all of the dough is cut and used. I always make a round shape out of the last bit of the dough.
Place on Baking Sheets
Arrange the treats onto your baking sheets.
Bake at 300 degrees F. for 20 minutes.
Allow to cool completely.
They Loved Them!
