Travel Jewelry Box

When I travel, I always bring some jewelry. Usually, I use a small bag, but all my jewelry gets tangled together. This is a solution to that problem, and also protects your jewelry from harm. (Here are the instructables for the ring and the seashell necklace in the box)

You will need:

- An empty Altoids tin

-Some fabric (I'm using this brown cotton)

-Scrap fabric (This will be used to create the ring holder, so it doesn't matter what it looks like. I'm using fleece because it is thicker so I need less of it.)

-Some cardboard

-Hot glue gun

-Mod Podge (or similar sealer)

-Scrapbook paper

-Pen

-Scissors

-Ruler

-Sponge brush

Using the ruler, scissors, and pen, mark and cut out these pieces of fabric and cardboard. (If you are not using a standard Altoids tin, you will have to figure out the measurements yourself.)

-Trace the Altoids tin onto your fabric twice and cut out

-One piece of fabric measuring 10 3/4 inches by 3/4 inches

-One 2 inch wide piece of fabric (The length will depend on how tall you make the ring holder, so trim to the correct length later.)

-Two 2 inch wide strips of scrap fabric (The length will depend on the thickness of your fabric, so again, trim to the correct length later.)

-One piece of fabric measuring 1 1/2 inches by 1 1/4 inches

-One piece of fabric measuring 1 1/2 inches by 2 1/4 inches

-One piece of cardboard measuring 3/4 inches by 2 1/4 inches

-One piece of cardboard measuring 3/4 inches by 1 1/4 inches

Glue the Altoids tin- shaped pieces of fabric to the inside of the lid and the bottom of the inside. Glue the 10 3/4 inch by 3/4 inch piece around the inside edge.

This is the hardest part. Start by gluing the 2 inch wide strip of fabric to the left side of the inside edge, closest to the lid. Now, take a strip of scrap fabric and roll it until you have a cylinder 1/2 inches thick. Trim off any extra. Glue it right at the edge of the tin, in line with the strip. Put a line of glue directly in front of the cylinder and glue. You should have a roll of fabric against the edge of the tin with the scrap fabric only showing on the end. Repeat these steps to create a second roll next to it. Trim off any extra fabric.

Hot glue the two remaining pieces of fabric around the pieces of cardboard. The cardboard should be totally covered except for 3 edges. Take the larger piece of fabric-covered cardboard and glue it in, flush with the edge of the ring holder. Make sure the 3 uncovered edges are on the sides and bottom. Take the smaller piece of cardboard, and glue it below the ring holder, dividing that compartment in two. You will probably have to cut that piece of cardboard down, as the ring holder often ends up slightly larger than planned.

Cut out a piece of scrapbook paper the size and shape of the top of the tin. Using Mod Podge, brush a thin layer over the top of the tin, add the scrapbook paper, and add some more Mod Podge. Let it dry, and you are done! Take it on a trip, or use it to give a friend some jewelry in.
