Traffic Light Restoration

I had an old traffic light in my shed and it needed to be restored. If you have a traffic light that is in some need of restoration I will take you through the process of repainting it to installing a sequencer.

The tools needed to complete this project are:

Drill with wire brush attachment

Phillips head and Flat head screwdriver

Eye protection and mask

The supplies needed are:

110v Wire

Sequencer (optional)

Spraypaint

We start by removing the LEDs by unscrewing the small screws that hold the LED module onto the chassis, do that for all LEDs.

Then unscrew the bolts holding each individual section of the light so that they separate into three sections so they will be easier to sand down.

For this step take the wire brush attached to the drill and grind all of the old paint of with the wire brush make sure to ALL of the old paint off the chassis or when you go to put the new paint on, the old paint will come off takeing off the new paint with it.

For painting I lined up all three sections as if they were connected to get maximum coverage with the spray paint, the paint I used was a bottle of yellow rust-oleum spray paint the color of the light turned out great.

one of the LEDs (the red one) had a broken resistor in it, so I took out the soldering iron and replaced the resistor with a brand new one from amazon.

To reasamble the light all you have to do is put the nuts and bolts back together that you unscrewed in step 2 and put the LED modules back onto the chassis with the small screws from step 1.

(This step is optional) To install the sequencer you first need to know what kind you have.

The one I used has three 2 position relays. You don’t need 2 position relays but any old controller will do fine, some controllers have different wiring, so all make a seconded diagram if you have a different sequencer I also put electrical tape on the back of the controller to protect the circuits.

Now that your traffic light is restored go have some fun with it.
