Few years ago, my students and I had a 3 days workshops for playing the airblock with programming. We enjoyed to play the airblock for these 3 days. We made the water pond for the airblock hovercraft. In addition, we decorated the hovercraft with the 3D printed sword.

After these 3 days workshop, we decided to make a new vehicle by using the airblock. We explored to make the imaginable vehicle by step by step. In the learning process, we learnt how to solve the problem and got a lot of fun. Finally, we successfully made the ex ordinary transportation system. Ha Ha! Challenge! Play well.

Supplies

Airblock

Littlebits:RF transmitter bit and RF receiver bit, dimmer bit, power bit, DC motor bit

3D printed 2 kg PLA

A remote controlled car (one or two)

A fishing line with 90 lbs

Two stands 5 kg

Making Airblock Tram (original)

We used the airblock to design the airblock tram.

Drawing the Tram Connector

We used tinkercad to construct the tram connector. It should be small. The weight of the airblock tram should be reduced so that the airblock tram could go faster. Infill of 3D printing should be 30-40% which depended on the hardness of the tram connector.

Driving the AIRBLOCK TRAM (Version 1)

The airblock tram Version 1

It was the preliminary idea of the tram by using the fan of the airblock. We used four fans of and the controller of the airblock to make the airblock tram. In addition, we needed two stands with 5 kg or more and fish lines with 90 lbs to construct the rope of the trams. Then, we asked the question. Could the airblock tram carry the goods? It is very interesting idea.

Modifying the Airblock Tram

door v1.jpg
airblock tram connector 2.jpg

In order to carry the goods, we made use of tinkercad to design the stage with the door and the tram connector. We separated the tram into the stage with the door and the tram connector so that the 3D printed materials could be reduced. The reason was that less support materials would be consumed. Overall idea was innovative.

Adding the stage to store goods with the electrical door.

In addition, the stage had an electrical door. Any goods could be carried by this stage with opening and closing the electrical door. It was amazing. Can we make it ex-ordinary? Which goods can be carried by this airblock tram? We had the following challenging idea for building the imaginable transportation system. What was it? It was using the remote controlled car.

Design a Remote Controlled Car and a Remote Controlled Bus

We used tinkercad to construct the remote controlled car and the remote controlled bus. The electronic parts of the car and the bus were bought from toys company. In addition, we added our school name, "Po Leung Kuk", to the bus. Inside the bus, the seats were built accordingly.

Design the AIRBLOCK TRAM (Version 3)

airblock tram holder.jpg

We used tinkercad to redesign a new airblock tram which could hold the car, the battery and the circuit for moving the door. In order to reduce the weight of airblock tram, we cut the 3D print materials by drawing a hole inside the connector. It was very good modification for reducing the weight of the airblock tram. We expected that the car drived into the airblock tram. Which device could we make for enabling the car driving into the airblock tram? The answer was the lift.

Design the Lift

servo holder.jpg

We used tinkercad to design a lift to rise or lower the car to the same level of stage of airblock tram. A gear, a pull head, a servo holder, a linear gear and a lever were 3D printed. The servo motor and the power supply 12V DC supply with 2A were installed in the lift.

Operating the Lift

  • The airblock tram
  • The car
  • The lift

The airblock tram could carry the car. In addition, the lift can rose up and lowered down the car. The stage could carry the car. In addition, we printed one more set of the stage in blue colour for an spare part as shown in the video. Everything was ready. Let us play them.

DIY Maker - Controlled Moving Vehicle

All these self made toys constructed the ex-ordinary transportation system. Yeah!!! We enjoyed playing the airbock tram, the remote controlled car and the lift. Let us sharing our experience to all my friends! All of you! Ha Ha. challenge! Play well!
