Toy Furniture
Introduction
Hi Friends,
Hoping all are safe and fine.Since the academic year is ending in few days and vacation is going to start, I thought I would share one of my childhood hobbies with you all. Students ,Parents and Teachers will really find it interesting. Can be used as a STEAM , Makerspace, Design activity too. Students would really enjoy doing this. ..So give it a try folks.
Here we are going to make three things.
1. A sofa
2. A tea table
3. A matchbox drawer....everything out of reusable material.
Supplies
Supplies are minimal.
I have used empty incense sticks boxes along with some empty match boxes.
Fevicol/Glue
scissors/ Pen knife
stuffing cotton
scrap cloth
coloured craft paper and Handmade paper
sponge / Styrofoam for drawer support
beads and ball pins for securing.
To Make the Toy Sofa...
1. Take two even sized boxes as shown in the images,( If you desire you can fill the empty boxes with waste newspaper for firmness. Your toy furniture becomes little heavy)
2. Take the desired size cloth to cover the toy sofa. ( tip: Its easy to glue cotton fabric than synthetic one)
3. Cut the two pieces in such a way that you can gift-wrap these two empty boxes with the top stuffed evenly with stuffing cotton used for stuffing toys.( Make sure cotton in stuffed evenly before securing all the ends)
4. once the two pieces are ready... base and back, secure them with some glue and ball pins.
5. Now its time to fix the arm rest...Use two proportionate boxes ( I have used empty soap cartons) and wrap them with the same cloth . ( no need for stuffing cotton. The choice is yours)
6. Fix the arm rests appropriately. ( tip: Decide on whether you want to leave a gap below or not. I haven't left any.)
7. LO....Your toy sofa is ready.
Simple Toy Tea Table...
1. you follow the same procedure as you did to make the toy sofa. Take one empty long box and wrap it with paper of your choice as shown in the image . ( Here I have used hand made paper to get some wood effect.)
2. Wrap the two small pieces also for the table legs.
3. Glue the legs proportionately to the base and your toy tea table is ready.
Simple Empty Matchbox Storage Toy Drawer
1. Take Six empty matchboxes.
2. Remove the trays and keep them aside.( the inner layer which holds the match sticks)
3. Glue all the six outer layers to form a cabinet.
4. cover them with some craft paper of your choice.
5. Now take the inner trays and remove the centre flap and decorate the inner surface with coloured craft paper of your choice .
6. You need to decorate the front portion of the trays. (Toy Drawers )
7. Make it more appealing. I have used craft glitter sheet strips and some beads and Styrofoam. (tip: You can stitch artificial medium sized pearls too. children love to open and close the draws often as this would be more firm)
8. Last use pieces of Styrofoam to support the entire unit. Your Storage toy drawer is ready. You can decorate the top according to your choice or leave it plain.
.......So the toy furniture is ready!!! you can add more accessories and build up on the same by extending it to the kitchen (cabinets), bedroom (Cots) etc.
