Have you ever wanted to make a toy? Well now you can. I am about to show you how to make a toy forklift with limited tools. All you need is:

Wood ( new or old )

A saw

A clamp

Glue

Wheels

Paint

A router

And a marker pen.

Cutting the Wood

Cut the wood to a suitable size.

I cut mine to L X W X H

4 X 4 X 4 cm

4 X 4 X 10 cm

Glue the Wood.

Using high strength glue i.e Titebond, glue the pieces together to make the body of the toy. Spread the glue equally on both sides and push them together using a little pressure.

Clamping Up

Using a bar clamp, squeeze the wood together and wipe up any excess glue with a damp sponge or cloth.

Leave it to dry over night in a cool dry place.

Sanding and Routing.

using a sander or sand paper smooth all of the edges so that the wood looks brand new with no splinters. Once you have sanded down the wood, run the body through the router using a round over bit. This will make the toy safe and smooth.

Painting

It is now time to paint. Use the colour of your choice to paint the lift using a fine brush.

Adding the Forks

using old lolly pop sticks make the forks. Glue 2 on the front to make the lift and use 1/2 a stick on each lift to make the forks. Leave to dry over night.

Adding the Wheels

using a drill and a metal dowel add the wheels from an old toy car to the both sides of the fork lift, leave to dry for a while. Once dry the toy is ready to use. You could also consider drawing extra detail in, such as a window and door.

a Little Extra.

A good idea is to make mini pallets to go with the toy.

Here is a link to a video on youtube that will show you how to make them. http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=5_8Z9OOGG34
