Toy Car Hanging V2

Hi All,

Few months back I had made the first Car truck hanging, It had few flaws

  • Wood used was too thin (5mm)
  • Not easy to work with
  • Acrylic colors did not come out as expected

This is my second attempt and I have have used different technique or making and painting using Oil paint instead of acrylic colors

This one is made from 10mm thick wood, holds 72 cars an better paint job.

Only drill machine was used in this built, rest all was done using hand tools. So once doesnot have to invested too much in purchasing these tools

  • Oil Paint- Brown, Black, Silver and Yellow
  • Metal L joint 4

Cut the Wooden strips

  • 6 pieces ; length 26 inches
  • 2 pieces ; length 26.5 inches
  • 2 pieces ; length 19 inches
  • 1 piece ; length 38 inches

On the two 19 inches wooden strip, carve, 10 mm slots as shown. One can use router if you have. I used saw to cut the edges and then a chisel to remove the wood. Do not carve too much as it can weaken the wood structure

Using metal L joints connect the two 26.5" and 19" pieces a shown are uneven, bent wooden strips

It is good if we drill holes before screwing . This will avoid wood from splitting

On a 12" x 12' " 6mm plywood, draw desired cabin.

Free hand works well. One can google to see images of trucks to get inspired

To cut windows and wheel space. I used drilling machine to drill initial holes and then used saw cut till the next corner

Paint It

After we have all pieces ready, using sanding paper 80 , 150 and 220, make the surface of wood smooth

Clean with cloth or tissue paper.

Apply wood primer and leave for 12 hrs, then apply thin coat of oil paint and leave for 24 hrs

After everything has dried use 220 grit sandpaper and make surface smooth, where needed.

Tip : Mix Oil paint with paint thinner (2:1 ratio). This will help dry faster and thinner coat.

For best results, apply paint along the direction of wood grain not against it

Wheels : I painted them black and left for a day, then using a art card as stencil, spray painted silver

Assemble It

Use thin screws and fix the frame and the bottom wooden strip. I am using holders to hang it on wall

Fix the cabin, wheels as shown

Add extra wood on the back side of cabin as support

Hang It
