This is our step-by-step tutorial on how to create a personalized game controller for the "Attack of the Bric-a-brac" Turtle mode.

Supplies

  • 4-5 Cardboard moving boxes
  • Scotch tape
  • Medium green acrylic or gouache paint
  • Dark green acrylic or gouache paint
  • Black acrylic or gouache paint
  • 1 Big paint brush
  • 1 Medium/small paint brush
  • Hot glue gun
  • Styrofoam sheet ~20 x 20 cm
  • 1 Cylinder-shaped object: 1 m length, 4 cm diameter
  • 1 Cylinder-shaped object: 1 m length, 2.5 cm diameter
  • Drill: 2.5 cm diameter (make sure it fits the material of the thicker cylinder object)
  • 1 Piece of string
  • Pair of scissors

Cutting the Cardboard

IMG_9135.jpg

Start out by taking apart two cardboard moving boxes so that they both lie flat on the ground. Sketch out the shapes shown in the picture, then use a cutter to cut along the lines. Pay attention so as not to cut your hands!

Creating the Ground of the Boat

IMG_9133.jpg

Arrange your cardboard cutout shapes so that the square parts both face each other and are on the inside and the curved parts are on the outside. Use scotch tape to attach the borders of the square parts of both cardboards to each other.

Creating the Outer Walls of the Boat

IMG_9132.jpg

Now fold the cardboard leaving the ground lying flat on the ground, and the curved parts standing up forming the outer walls of the boat. Carefully fold/curve the ends of the boat walls towards the inside of the boat so as to form the shape of a canoe.

Use scotch tape to tape the pointy ends of the boat so that the cardboard can now stand by itself and forms the shape of a canoe.

Your base structure is done!

Painting the Boat

IMG_9145.jpg

Place your boat in an environment safe for painting (outside). Use acrylic or gouache paint and a big brush to paint the basic structure of your boat in a medium shade of green. Leave to dry.

Creating the Decoration

IMG_9158.jpg

While waiting for the boat to dry, take apart your third cardboard box so it lies flat on the ground. Sketch out hexagon shapes in different sizes. Cut out 100-120 cardboard hexagons.

Once cut out, use dark green acrylic or gouache paint and a medium/small paint brush to paint each hexagon. Then use black acrylic or gouache paint to outline each hexagon.

Leave to dry.

Decorating the Boat

Once both the boat and the hexagons have dried, use a hot glue gun to glue the hexagons to the outside of the boat. Put the bigger ones in the center and the smaller ones towards both ends. Leave to dry/harden.

Creating a Tripod for the Fishing Rod

IMG_9183.jpg

Assemble several pieces of cardboard into an equilateral triangle as shown in the photo. Now place a styrofoam triangle shape on top so as to solidify/strengthen the structure.

Add three strips of cardboard forming a pyramid shape, leaving a 5 x 5 cm opening. Now tape the construction together as needed.

Creating the Fishing Rod

IMG_7895.jpg

Find an object in the shape of a cylinder with ~1 m length and 4 cm diameter. Drill a hole with a diameter of 2.5 cm leaving 3 cm length at the end of the cylinder object.

Creating the Pivot Point

IMG_7904.jpg

Insert the second cylinder-shaped object with a diameter of 2.5 cm through the hole drilled into the first one. This creates a pivot point in your fishing rod.

Now place the construction into your styrofoam base with the thicker part standing upright perpendicular to the ground and the thinner part being parallel to the ground.

Finishing the Fishing Rod Construction

Fix the string to the end of the thinner cylinder and cut off the excess with a pair of scissors. The string should be long enough to reach to the floor. Your construction should resemble a fishing rod (without a hook at the end).
