This tutorial will show you how to work with air drying clay to make an adorable (or terrifying) Toothless Mask!

Supplies

  • Air Drying Clay
  • Acrylic Paints
  • Newspapers
  • Tape
  • Scissors
  • Paint Brushes
  • Glue Gun
  • Black CD-Marker/Black Permanent Marker
  • Sliding Cutting Knife
  • Talcome P

Step 1 : Designing Your Mask

Firstly, decide how you want your mask to be, and what elements you would like to add to it. Here, I've made a tribal mask, which also depicts Toothless's face on it. Additionally, I've made his mouth positioned in such a way, that it resembles that of a Power Rangers Visor, such as the one given above. Why? I dunno! I just really liked the idea and just went with it! Get creative!

Print out the mask template to a size that roughly matches your head.

Step 2 : Making the Base

It's time to make a base using our air drying clay!

First, mix about 90 grams of clay resin and hardener by rolling it with your hands until they form a consistent dirty-white coloured.

Before dealing with anything clay-involved, use talcum powder on your hands and on your printout to prevent the clay from sticking to your hands and the paper.

Time is of the essence here, as these Air-drying clay start to set very quickly once mixed properly, as fast as in 20 minutes. Once hardened they cannot be moulded into any other shape.

Hence make sure to only mix small quantities at a time!

Next we form the base by covering the template with this our clay. Form a decently thick layer so that it isn't too flimsy after it is hardened.

Step 3 : Creating a Mound and Shaping the Base

We don't want your base to be just a pancake. Instead, we want to be curved outwards, similar to the human face!

To make a mould, crumble up newspapers and join the crumbles with tape to form the shape that you want.

Then carefully remove the clay layer from the paper, and place it on the mould, and leave it to dry. (avoid wear and tear of the base while removing!). Leave the base for drying.

Step 4 : Adding the Details

Now we have to make the details to make the pancake into Toothless!

Make the same small batch of clay and start making each component of your design.

For my design, I have 3 elements on each side (Which resemble his ears and frills) of his face, two more such elements on the forehead, 2 adorable eyes with pupils and an open mouth, which also resembles a visor of sorts. Also, toothless has some noticeable scales running down his body starting from in-between his eyes, and until the end of his tail. Here, I've added three of those scales, just for more detail.

Attach these parts by using some newly made clay, and allow your mask to completely dry. The new clay will set and attach your parts together.

OR, you could finish painting each part individually and THEN attach them, which is what I did.

If for some reason the parts still seem to come off, you could always use a glue gun to attach them together.

Our Night Fury is coming together! But if you feel it looks a bit dull, worry not! Because the real magic comes when we paint it. So grab your paints and brushes people!

Step 5 : Painting!

Finally, the best part : painting our mask!

Paint each part with a base layer of paint, and after it's dried , add in the extra details.

For my case, I used black as a base colour for pretty much all my parts.

For the highlights, I used blue and white to create sort of a glowing effect, resembling Toothless's ALPHA mode shown above!

Paint the ENTIRE eyes with green and yellow, to make it remember Toothless's actual eyes; Green around the sides, and yellow-green towards the middle. After the green is dried, use a black CD-writer to colour in the pupils, and finally, use pure white to add highlights to his eyes as shown.

For the mouth, once the pure black coat is completely dried, use a toothpick dipped in white paint, to carefully draw his teeth. Using a toothpick would help you be more precise than if you were using a paintbrush.

Also, if you want, you could reduce the number of teeth drawn. Personally, I feel like I went overboard with the number of teeth I drew (Which is ironic since his name is, you know, 'TOOTHLESS') but it's a matter of preference.

If you painted each part individually, finally attach them using clay or a glue gun, and add some final touch ups around the newly added clay.

Step 6 : Enjoy Your Creation !

Once your done with attaching/painting, it is now time to enjoy your masterpiece! Display it anywhere you like, or if you want, provide additional arrangements to allow us to hang it on any wall.

I hope this journey was enjoyable to you! Thanks for scrolling!
