I read Junji Ito's popular manga: Tomie, and immediately knew I had to recreate the iconic look, in the most realistic way possible.

If you're a fan of horror manga and the eerie beauty of Junji Ito's work, you're in for a treat. In this tutorial, we'll be exploring how to transform yourself into the captivating and enigmatic character of Tomie.

This is a budget friendly tutorial as well, I made this in under 40$ (3000Rs. in INR), including the wig and makeup products used.

Supplies

For the prosthetic face

  1. Plaster of Paris strips: you will need just one bandage roll (2$)
  2. Mod Podge or any other sealer : matte finish preffered (6$)
  3. Acrylic Paint (for skin tone and face features) (5-8$)
  4. Liquid Latex : I used Kryolan (7$)
  5. False lashes (0.5$)
  6. Cotton balls

Other materials

  1. White contact lens (5$)
  2. Black wig with bangs (10$)
  3. Basic makeup - Concealer, Red face paint

Plaster Face Cast

Make a cast of your face by following the steps below, make sure to cover only one side of your face, as shown in the image.

  1. Protect the Skin
  2. Apply plastic wrap or Vaseline to the face to prevent the plaster from sticking.
  3. Set Up Breathing Straw
  4. Insert a straw in your nostrils to allow for breathing during the casting process. Make sure it’s secure.
  5. Cut Plaster Bandages
  6. Cut the plaster bandages into strips of varying lengths (about 6-8 inches).
  7. Apply Plaster
  8. Dip each strip of plaster bandage in a bowl of water, then apply it carefully to the face, starting from the forehead and working downwards.
  9. Overlap strips to ensure full coverage and strength.
  10. Build Layers
  11. Apply at least 2-3 layers of plaster bandages for durability. Allow each layer to set slightly before adding the next.
  12. Let It Dry
  13. Once the final layer is applied, allow the cast to dry completely (this may take 30-60 minutes).
  14. Remove the Cast
  15. Carefully peel the cast away from the face, starting from the edges. Take your time to avoid breaking it.
  16. Final Touches
  17. Trim any rough edges with scissors and smooth out any imperfections from the inside of your cast and strengthen the thinner areas with more plaster

Paint Your Face Cast

  1. Seal the face cast with sealer of choice
  2. Paint the face according to your skin tone and try to make it as realistic as possible.
  3. Attach false lashes on the eye
  4. Add another layer of sealer to fix everything in place.

Attaching the Prosthetic to Your Face

  1. Place the painted face cast over your face and mark the corners to get an idea where it ends
  2. Use cotton and liquid latex to make a frame around the markings, and attach the prosthetic onto your face.
  3. Add more cotton and latex to create a veiny transition between the two faces
  4. Use a fluffy brush and apply concealer on the cotton-latex parts.
  5. Also, add redness around the area with red face paint.

Final Touches

  1. Do your usual makeup routine: Foundation, eye makeup, lashes, and try to keep both faces as similar as possible.
  2. Add a birthmark under your eye to resemble Tomie's look
  3. I suggest wearing a wig cap or a bald cap before you start the previous step to get your natural hair out of the way, as well as to make it easier to put on the wig.
  4. Wear the black wig, make sure the bangs go above both your real face, as well as the prosthetic.
