Reuse your toilet paper rolls for fun door décor!

Why we love it:

This craft reuses items around the house including toilet paper rolls and used gift tissue. It is quick and simple enough for young children to complete. You can revisit the craft for different seasons or themes to add decorations to your doors/windows (see ideas at the end).

Supplies

Supplies:

  • Toilet paper roll
  • Tissue paper
  • Glue
  • Markers
  • Pipe cleaners
  • Scissors

Optional:

  • Ribbon (about ½ thick)
  • Pompoms
  • Beads
  • Googly eyes
  • paper/colored paper

Cut Streamers

cutting.png

Cut tissue paper into ½ inch thick strips. You will need 10 long (18-24”) strips and 5-6 short strips. Depending on your color scheme you can choose how many of each color.

Glue Streamers

glue2.png

A. Glue the 10 long strips along the inside of the toilet paper roll. Use about ½ of the length to glue onto the roll. Overlap each strip slightly with the previous (see picture).

B. Glue the 5-6 short strips along the outside of the toilet paper roll. You will use ribbon or paper to cover these glued edges, so only glue as far up as the thickness of your ribbon/paper (so it will cover the glued edges of the strips). Depending on the thickness of your tissue paper strips, you will use 5-6 strips placed side by side (no overlap) to go around the whole roll.

Decorate Roll

decor2.png

A. Cut a piece of ribbon or a strip of paper long enough to go around the toilet paper roll. Glue this strip along the edge of the roll to cover the tissue paper strips (see picture)

B-C Decorate the rest of the roll with markers and other supplies. Pictured here: Funky Alien (see below for more ideas!)

Attach the Handle

Based on what the “front” of your streamer is, about  ½” down from the top of the roll, on each side poke a small hole with either scissors or a sharp pencil/pen. Loop a pipe cleaner through one hole from the inside out (A), with enough slack to twist to secure (B). Bend/arch the pipe cleaner to the other side, looping through the other hole and securing (C).

Voilà! All Done!

Here are some more design ideas we have tried! Pictured here: A) Reindeer with red pompom nose, googly eyes, and brown pipe cleaner antlers, B) clouds made from cotton balls glued to the roll and white paper for the face, and C) Wake Forest black and gold (Go Deacs!).
