Pixar Inspired Table/Wall mounted Work Lamp. Inspiration - and off course the Pixar lamp

Wall light was not enough to light up worktable to manage minuscule electronics repair and assembly. So focused lighting on the worktable to concentrate, at the same time leaving rest of the room lighten enough to avoid eye stress and difficulties in moving around.

Design philosophy was to use easily available, ready-made parts around house and local hardware/electrical shops and design and 3d print remaining customized parts around those. Ready-made parts like Bulb Holder, Switch and Steel-Pipe, Nut-Bolts at joints etc. to ensure Electrical Safety and Mechanical Strength of the fixture, respectively.

Readymade parts

  1. Steel Pipe (12mm Outer Dia.)
  2. Switch (Standard Board Switch, Commonly available in India)
  3. Nuts, Bolts and Washers (6mm)
  4. 3mm Nuts, Bolts n Washers
  5. LED Bulb (B22 Base, Commonly available in India)
  6. Holder (B22 socket, Commonly available in India)

Printed Parts

  1. Bulb Shade (Shade.stl x1)
  2. Arm Clamps (ArmHold1.stl x4, ArmHold2.stl x4)
  3. Lock Washers (Lockwasher1.stl x2, Lockwasher2.stl x2)
  4. Wall Mount and Swivel (Swivel.stl x1, WallMount.stl x1)
  5. Tilt Adjust Knobs (Knob1.stl x4, Knob2.stl x4)
  6. Inline Switch Cover (SwitchCover.stl x1)

Print instructions

All part can be printed w/o Support.

Lay the parts with flat side down on the build plate.

I've printed all the parts in PLA+ and they are holding well till now. Lamp shade gets a little warm but no issue even with prolonged, continuous usage.

I've designed this around the LED Bulb and Socket of B22 Mounting Standard, which is very commonly available in India. I've included the original CAD files which can easily be modified to match Bulbs and Sockets of other mounting standards (IKEA etc.)

Assembly Notes

  • Lock Washers are printed separately and glued to the Arm Clamps for FDM printability.
  • Lock Washers 1 & 2 are pair and need be glued to the two meeting surfaces. Please don’t mix up, otherwise they won’t mesh...!
  • CA glue works just fine. For proper alignment, pass a bolt though the Arm Clamp and Lock Washer before applying glue to the meeting surfaces.
  • Parts to be glued are indicated in the assembly sections below. Please Follow the sign.

Wire Management

Screenshot 2022-11-24 141656.png

Connect one end of the Twisted Pair wire to the Socket Terminals and run the wire through the Hollow Steel Pipes and connect to Main Supply though the Switch. This is standard Electrical connection but take necessary caution while making the electrical connections as per the Electrical Standard in your Country…!! Take expert’s help if you are not familiar or comfortable in working with High Voltage Electrical Connection.

Outcome

A well-lit desk with just enough light for the surroundings to avoid eye stress…!! 😊

Limitations and Scope of Improvements

Because of the 3D printed (In PLA+) Bulb Shade, this could use only LED bulb which produces the least amount of heat, against which the Shade stand well. I’ve been using this since last one year during most of my working hour at night w/o any problem so far. The other 3d printed fixtures are holing well under load, w/o any sign of fatigue. I’m very happy with how this has turned out at the first iteration itself…

This is designed around the Socket and LED Bulb commonly available in India (B22 standard) but I’ve shared the original CAD (DSM) files, which can be easily modified to support Bulb & Socket of another standard (IKEA etc.)
