Tissue Box Made From a Tissue Paper, Super Glue and Baking Soda
There's a Seinfeld episode where Cosmo Kramer writes a book about coffee tables and the best part is the book can also be made into a coffee table. With that in mind here's how to make a Tissue box from a sheet of tissue paper.
There was also a couple of other reasons for making the Tissue box.
- To experiment building something with CA (Cyanoacrylate), (Super) glue and baking soda - I had previously used it to make a zipper stop on a tent and one of the comments mentioned they also used it with paper or cloth to make small objects. https://www.instructables.com/Superglue-and-Bakin...
- To make a small Tensegrity spring using a couple of small cups with one fitting inside the other - also made from tissue paper, CA glue and baking soda.
The build was done with minimal tools, planning and measurement so it has an "organic' feel.
Making a Mould
A mold was made by stacking 2 tissue packets together and wrapping in cling film.
Cling film was also laid down on the bench because CA glue can be messy to use. Gloves were worn, don't try this without them unless you want your fingers stuck together. The build was done in front of an open window to get rid of the fumes from the CA glue. Even so, I did get a slight head ache.
A tissue sheet was laid over the mold tightened to form a box shape. A bit of sticky tape at the back held it until a couple of drops of glue was applied to secured it.
Applying CA Glue and Baking Soda
CA glue was squeezed onto the tissue paper and baking soda sprinkled on top. This set the CA glue immediately, absorbing the baking soda and hardening it too. Another way is to sprinkle down some baking soda and then apply the CA glue on top. About 5 - 6 small tubes on CA glue were used with a cost of $2 in total.
Tensegrity Spring Keeps the Tissues Coming
To make the tissues keep appearing at the top of the holder, a spring was made along with a backing plate.
The backing plate was made with a cut piece of tissue cut a little smaller than the box's lenght and width, laid flat, CA glue and baking soda was applied to form a solid plate.
The spring was made with two small cup shapes, one in the other with a couple of rubber bands in between. This forms a tensegrity spring, Tensegrity refering to a couple of compression members held seperate and together by tension, in this case they are seperated by the rubber band and case and tissues hold them together.
A small cup was made over a small mold of play doh with cling film over this. tissue paper, CA glue and Baking Soda was applied over the mold. The next cup was made using the previous cup as the mold, ensuring one will fit over the other.
A rubber band was applied over the larger cup and the small one placed on top, along with the backing plate and some tissues. These were placed inside the previously made box to complete the project.
