Tiny Faux Taxidermy
I found some small wooden plaques at a thrift store, and knew that I had to do something with them. The first thing that popped into my head? Tiny mounted animal heads, of course! But I wanted to go for goofy critters - no deer or moose or any other typical "trophy" animals. I wanted a goat, a pig, and a dinosaur!
What You'll Need
- Plastic animals about 5"-7"
- Wooden plaques about 4" tall
- Picture frame hangers
- 1/2" nails
- Hammer
- E-6000 or your glue of choice
- Hand saw (or whatever you have around)
I got a bag of plastic farm animals at the dollar store, and I just pried the picture frame hangers off some old frames I had lying around. I found the plaques at a thrift store, but craft stores like Hobby Lobby carry them in a plain wood for about $3 each. If you get one of those, I recommend staining it before doing anything else.
Off With Their Heads!
Using your saw of choice, carefully and unashamedly chop the heads off of these poor plastic animals. I used a hand saw with a miter box to keep my cuts straight.
Hammer Time
Attach the picture frame hanger to the back of the wooden plaques. Make sure your nails are short enough that they won't punch out the front of the plaque.
Glue It On
Apply some E-6000 to the neck of the animals, and glue them in the center of the wooden plaque. I let it set for 24 hours before trying to move them.
Display and Enjoy!
Once they're dry, hang them on the wall, and enjoy your awesome plastic animal trophies.
