Timpani Setup

This resource provides a 10 step process and description for each on how to set up, tune, and play the timpani.

Remove covers from drum heads and place them in a safe area.

Position the 32" drum, which is the largest drum, on the left side of the percussion section. This drum should also be positioned to the left side of your body.

Position the 29" drum to the right of the 32" drum.

Position the 26" drum to the right of the 29" drum.

Position the 23" drum, which is the smallest drum to the right of the 26" drum. This drum should also be positioned to the right side of your body.

Position the tuning pedals where all four pedals are pointing towards you.

You will need timpani specific mallets to play the drums. Snare drum sticks are too hard and yarn mallets are too soft. These should be located in the percussion cabinet/drawer, and will also be needed for Step 8.

Find the playing zone directly above the pedal on the 32" drum with your timpani mallets in a playing position. Pivot from the hips to the next drum without moving your arms. Continue this process for each drum, adjusting each drum further or close to you until each drum can be played in the same area of the head by pivoting from the hips without extending your arms any further from the position you found on the 32" drum.

Find the names of the two-four pitches you need for the pieces being rehearsed on your music. After finding the names, adjust the tuning pedals higher or lower for each drum until you have tuned them to the required pitches.

Once the drums are set up, positioned, and tuned, the only step left is to play the drums and have fun doing it.
