Tile Mounted Plant Pots (IKEA Hack)

This is a very simple hack, but will really help out those who think they don't have the space to grow plants or those who live in rented accommodation so can't just get out the drill when you want to put something up. Also, I did this to make the most of the massive bathroom window which is south facing but doesn't benefit from a window sill.

Stugvik baskets can be found in the bathroom accessory part of your nearest IKEA. You are going to need as many of those as you want planters. In addition you are also going to need -

Weed proof pot lining (coconut fibre lining will also work)

  • Glass cleaner
  • Cleaning cloths
  • Potting compost
  • Seedlings

Step 1 & 2: Lining the Pot and Cleaning the Tiles

You are going to want to cut your liner to size, making sure that there is enough to cover the inside of the basket. The reason that you need to do that is because of the holes at the bottom which are great for bathroom accessories, but a little bit big for planters. Lining the pot will help the compost stay in the pot and out of your bath - trust me, I learnt the hard way.

Once you've lined the pot you are going to want to follow IKEA's instructions for affixing the pot to the wall. Again, learnt the hard way and am still picking out compost from the tiles around the bath. Basically you need to clean the tiles thoroughly, clean and let the suction cups on the basket air dry, and then attach the suction cups to the wall and leave for 24hrs before attaching the pot.

Step 3: Plant Up and Put Up

Once you've waited 24hrs, you can fill your pot with compost and whatever else you want to grow in it. The large baskets are good for a weight of up to 4kg, and even laden with soil and two strawberry plants my planter comes in a under 2kg, so you should have plenty of allowance for water and growth.
