Tie Dye Sweatshirt

Learn how to tie-dye a sweatshirt! Tie Dyeing is a classic summertime project and making a tie dye sweatshirt is perfect for those cool summer nights.

And if you have a colored sweatshirt, you can try the bleach tie dye (or reverse tie dye) method.

• Plain White Cotton Sweatshirt
• Tie Dye Kit or Tie-Dye Dye and Soda Ash
• Rubber Bands
• Plastic Wrap
• Latex Gloves
• Paper Towels

Soak the sweatshirt in water

Shape the sweatshirt by wrapping, scrunching, folding, and/or twisting it into your desired pattern.

I went with a spiral shape, which you can do by twisting it from the middle. Don't forget to add folds or scrunching to the sleeves!

Wrap rubber bands around it to secure it and add additional designs.

Mix together the soda ash and water according to the kit if you're using a kit. If not, mix 1 cup of soda ash with 1 gallon of water. Let the sweatshirt soak for at least 20 minutes.

Add warm water to the dye bottles up until the fill line on the bottle. Shake them up so all of the dye is dissolved.

Cover your surface with plastic wrap and put on some gloves.

Add dye one color at a time to the sweatshirt. Start with the lightest color first.

Make sure to separate the folds and add plenty of dye. A sweatshirt is very thick so you'll need more dye than you think - otherwise you'll end up with a mostly white sweatshirt!

As you use each color, flip it over to get dye on both sides.

Wrap the newly dyed sweatshirt with the plastic wrap and leave it aside for the dye to set for 24 hours.

Rinse it off until the water primarily runs clear. Then throw it in the washing machine to get the rest of the dye out and then dry it.

And now you have a newly tie dyed sweatshirt!
