Tic Tac Toe Toilet Paper Holder

This week guys, I made a wooden Toilet Paper holder in the shape of a Tic Tac Toe game. I seen these on Pinterest, but didn't find any instructions on how to make one. This is my version, using some scrap White Pine wood, add a little stain and paint.

What you will need:

Table Saw

Dado set for the Table saw

Enough wood for 8 pieces 20" long x 4 1/8" wide x 3/4" thick and 6 pieces 6" long x 4 1/8" wide x 3/4" thick

Clamps

Wood Filler

Putty Knife

Sander with 220 grit Sandpaper

Minwax Dark Walnut stain

Red Paint

Sawtooth hangers

Hammer

I first gathered up enough wood for the project, then I setup the Table saw at 4 1/8" wide, ripped the stock.

Then I installed my Table Saw sled, and added a stop block at 20". We need 8 pieces, I cut 9, going to use one for setting up the Dado cuts. I also cut 6 pieces 6" long.

Note I used my Table Saw, but you could use a Mitre Saw instead.

Now we need to install the Dado blades, make sure that the machine is off and unplugged, Safety First.

Install enough blades to cut the thickness of your stock.

After we install the Dado blades, do a test cut to make sure it's wide enough for your boards, if not add or subtract blades. Then set to a height of 2 1/16", adjust the fence with a stop block of wood clamped to the fence. For the first cuts, set it at 1", cut the Dado, then flipped the board around and do the other side. Once all 8 pieces are done, rest the stop block at 6 3/4" and repeat the process. Then for the X's, set the stop block at 2 5/8" and cut them.

Note I done one piece at a time, I would recommend clamping several pieces together to help on Tearout

Because of tear out on my dado slots, I had to apply some wood putty to the Tear out.

Let the putty dry a few hours and then sand with 220 grit sandpaper.

Now that we have the pieces sanded, it's time to assemble your parts. This is easy, just align slots together and push, they might be a little tight. You might have to use a Rubber mallet to hammer the pieces together.

Now it's time to Stain and paint your pieces. I decide to stain the frame with Minwax Dark Walnut stain. Brush a good coat of stain onto the wood, let it set for about 10 to 15 minutes, then wiped off the excess.

As for the X's, I decide to paint them Red.

After letting the stain dry overnight, I sprayed a couple coats of Matte Clear finish.

After letting the clear coat dry, I attach 2 Sawtooth hangers, as you can see in the picture, I use a piece of tape to hold the tiny nails while hammering.

Now hang the frame and install your X's and toilet paper, I made mine to fit the Double rolls from Angel soft. If you have bigger rolls, you will have to adjust your dimensions.
