Three Grains (or More) Cereal / Trail Mix

Store shelves are chock a block loaded with cereal selections. In almost every one on the shelf, you find one, two, three and sometimes five different formulations of some kind of natural (or unnatural) sugars. At Aldi, the shelf space is shorter and the 'plain grains' much easier to find - and nicely priced to boot. They've been out of the shredded wheat biscuit things for a while (which is why I became so familiar with searching Cereal Isle Shelves for the plain grains in a box.)

Stores offer a variety of 'healthy' cereals and 'trail mixes' and some do not include added sugars while all seem to include inflated pricing.

Well, I won't overpay for 'healthy food!'

So I make my own - and you can, too

Now, it won't be easy finding 'sugars free' cereals on your Grocer's shelves - their interest is in the profit margin and copying the big sweet selling brands is what they do. However, once you find where they hide them and see what the package looks like, it should be easier the second time around.

Also, look for 'store brands' because we all know Piggly Wiggly doesn't have a cereal making plant any more than Food Lion has a bean canning plant in Pohkipsee.

My mother would say that 'it all goes down the same pipe,' referring to the food on our plates. She could also have correctly stated "it all comes from the same plants" when feeding us the 'store brand' stuff.

Now, I've found a circular oats, a bran flakes, and a wheat biscuit cereal that meet my picky criteria and store them in hermetically-sealed Rubbermaid Containers (or equivalent).

I also purchase plain oatmeal - but usually cook that by itself. I guess I could add it to this mix of three and consume it 'cold oats'- just never tried it yet.

Simplicity itself!

Gather a couple of hermetically-sealed storage containers and the three or more boxes of grains you've found.

Open all three (or more if you've found another) store bought boxes and cut the tops off the inner bags (if any).

[OATS,BRAN,WHEAT,REPEAT]

One cup at a time dip your measuring cup into one of the grains and carry it to one of your containers, repeat for the second grain, repeat for the third grain, repeat for the n grain . . .

Be sure to stop repeating when the hermetically-sealed container is full!

If necessary, open a second hermetically-sealed storage container and repeat 'till it's full*.

Put the filled hermetically-sealed storage container(s) in your cabinet.

Wait 'till morning.

*or until you run out of grain!

Have a Very Grainy Breakfast

Now, it's a simple matter to serve a multi-grain breakfast and get all three rains in one fell scoop!

Add diced banana.

Add raisins.

Add dried fruit (Apricots? Or prunes perhaps?)

Add nuts?

Add coconut?

Sure, why not

Eat it like trail mix.

Or add milk and eat it like mommy served it.

Side of buttered toast and coffee? (I eat it My Way)

Enjoy
