Theater Up Lighting

Theater Up lighting the easy way.

While building my home movie theater I knew we wanted up lighting to so the rest of the lights in the room could be dimmed but still wanted some light to see with.

I had a plan in my head on how to accomplish this and the effect i was looking for.

Supplies

Wood Trim including a lower piece (for stacking) , and cove or crown molding for the upper

Led light strips and controller.

Tools required, Brad nailer, compound miter saw, air compressor, tape measure

Planning

The first step is planning out where the lighting will go, this is necessary as you will have to provide electricity (a plug) for the lights. (I have a light temporally installed in this photo until it's replaced with a plug)

I had to build the bulk heads around the duct work first and then place the plug above where i knew the finished stacked cove molding would go.

After the plug is installed you need to finish the drywall and paint. That's not covered in this diy.

Installing Trim

Stacking trim for looks is personal preference. There are many styles of trim to chose from.

After picking your trim and painting it what ever colour you have chosen you need to install the lower trim first. this is what the led lights will be attached to to point upwards to give the glow affect (up lighting)

In this one photo i had temporary lights to test it for the effect before replacing them with the final lights.

I bought a 25m roll of lights from Amazon that included the lights and power supply with controller.

After installing the lights working from the plug around the perimeter they are attached to the bottom of the trim (what would normally be against the floor if you were installing baseboard) this is the last time you will see the lights so make sure they are all working.

After making sure the lights and the controller are working it's time to install the Cove trim

The cove trim gets attached to the previous trim piece leaving a gap so it's not touching the ceiling (i set mine at 1/2 inch) you can set what ever distance you like.

I also left a removable piece near the plug so if I had to replace the controller it is accessible.

Enjoy

Sit back and enjoy your new lighting. Mine are controlled either by an app on my cell phone or a simple remote that came with the lights.
