The Ultimate Drill Improvement Kit

UDIK2.jpg

This instructable will show how to make The ultimate drill improvement kit from 3D printed parts and standard parts.

Clamped on a standard drill, this tool will help to:

  • drill perpendicular
  • drill at the right depth
  • drill on cylindrical parts
  • and also to do clean drilling

This design is for a standard 43mm drill attachment, it can be updated for other type of drill (STP files are attached).

Steel tubes

Cut to 30mm length with a jigsaw and finish with file/sand paper.

Threaded rods

  1. Cut to165mm length with a jigsaw.
  2. Put 2 M8 nut at 8mm, then file 2 flats until it matches with a 5.5mm spanner.
  3. Finish with file/sand paper.

Parts printing

5 printed parts are needed:

  • Baseplate
  • Drill attachment
  • Extension, required for drill bit longer than 100mm
  • Tube adaptor, required to drill straight across tube
  • Vacuum adaptor

I used the following parameters :

  • Layer 0,2mm
  • Honeycomb infill 30 %
  • Support is required for drill attachment, vacuum adaptor and tube adaptor

  1. Glue a M6 nut in the drill attachment slot
  2. Glue the threaded rod on the baseplate and insert the steel tubes
  3. Glue the steel tubes in the drill attachment
  4. Put a M8 nut on each threaded rod
  5. Insert the rod in the attachment, then add M8 nuts and springs
  6. Tight until the height between baseplate and attachment reach 43mm
  7. Glue a M6 nut in the extension slot
  8. For drill bit longer than 100mm, the extension have to be used. In this case fasten the extension on the drill attachment with 2 M6 bolts
  9. install the tool on the 43mm attachment of the drill and tight the M6 bolt. The pictures show the tool with and without the extension
  10. Clip the vacuum adaptor on the baseplate
  11. Clip the tube adaptor below the base plate

The depth can be set with a 13mm spanner (hold the rod with a 5.5mm spanner), in this case 35mm.

Both M8 nuts must be at the same height.

Hold the baseplate with 2 fingers then push on the drill.

For accurate countersink, fine tune the M8 nut: a 1/4 turn is about 0.3mm (pitch is 1.25mm).

Drilling across tubes is possible up to 30mm diameter (stroke of the tool is limited to 35mm).

And thanks to the vacuum adaptor, you can now drill a brick wall without any dust.
