The Scientific Solution for Perfectly Splitting Oreos!

The Secret Way to Perfectly Splitting an Oreo!

In April of 2022, MIT released a paper showing it's impossible to twist an Oreo and have the creme split perfectly between the two wafers. Well, with a little help from science, I found a way we can cheat! This is a super fun party trick, so invite some friends over to show them how you've cheated the laws of science to bring them perfectly split Oreos!

Follow this tutorial to build a Creme Cutter which perfectly scores the creme on your Oreos, then put those Oreos in your freezer overnight and when you take them out the next day you'll discover you can twist the Oreos and the creme splits perfectly thanks to a phenomenon called crack propagation. Watch the video above for a demonstration plus a full explanation on how this works.

Supplies

3D Print Everything

3D print all of the files here. You'll want to print each file once, except for "ChuckJaw.STL" - you will want three of those.

Assemble Your Creme Cutter

  • Slide all three Chuck Jaws into the Chuck and hold them in there with the #12 rubber band
  • Slide the Bushing into the Base and then slide the Chuck into the Bushing
  • Push the Crank onto the end of the Chuck, and attach it with a 1 inch long 1/4-20 flathead screw. If your 3D printer made rough internal threads, you will need to run a 1/4-20 tap through them to clean them up
  • Use hot-glue to attach the Nameplate to the Base
  • Slide the scalpel onto the Scalpel Holder (you might need to use needlenose pliers).

Prepare Your Oreos

  • Insert the Mega Stuf Oreo into the 3-Jaw Chuck and fiddle with the jaws until the Oreo is relatively centered
  • Turn the Crank to rotate the Oreo slowly while pushing in the scalpel until the Scalpel Holder stops going in any further
  • Carefully take the Oreo out of the 3-Jaw Chuck and put it in the freezer overnight

Surprise Your Friends!

  • Take your Oreos out of the freezer and allow them to thaw just slightly for maybe 5 minutes
  • Now you can give the Oreos to your friends, and when they twist them they'll discover the creme splits perfectly!
