The Revolving Solar System Model

This project is a successful blend of science and engineering, demonstrating the fundamental concept of orbital mechanics. The model clearly illustrates the order and movement of our planetary neighborhood, bringing the vast scale of space down to a hands-on, engaging display.

Supplies

  1. Circular Cardboard
  2. Art Paper
  3. Styrofoam Sheet
  4. Styrofoam Ball
  5. Paint
  6. GI Wire
  7. Light Strip

  1. Take a circular cardboard piece and cover its top surface with blue art paper using glue.
  2. The circular cardboard serves as the sturdy base for the entire project. The blue art paper represents the vast expanse of space or the cosmic environment in which the celestial bodies exist and orbit.

Constructing the Sun

  1. Use a styrofoam sheet to cut out a small, round shape. Draw the flares or rays of the sun on this shape.
  2. Cut and Insert a styrofoam ball into the center of the sheet to give the Sun a spherical appearance.
  3. Color the entire structure in appropriate shades to complete the Sun's appearance.

Mechanical Structure and Planet Placement

  1. Utilize GI wire to construct a support structure. This structure is designed to facilitate the rotation of the planets around the Sun.
  2. Place the planets onto the ends of the GI wires, ensuring they are positioned at various distances from the Sun to represent their actual orbital paths.

Orbital Boundary and Enclosure

  1. Add a round cardboard structure around the entire project's inner circumference.
  2. Cover the whole surface with black art paper.
  3. It helps to visually represent the general orbital plane in which most planets revolve around the Sun, keeping the model compact and contained.

Illumination and Activation

  1. Add a light strip along the edge of the round cardboard enclosure.
  2. Connect the mechanism to a power source or motor to start the rotation.
