The Magic Flute

Did you ever want your own Magic Flute? Or do you need a prop for a play? Have a little one that is interested in music? This is the perfect gift!

You can crochet your very own magic flute!

You only need a basic knowledge of crochet - chain stitch, single crochet, Decrease (2 together) and slip stitch and some basic hand sewing.

Materials needed:

Yellow or Gold worsted weight yarn (I used Red Heart brand, but any worsted weight yellow or gold yarn will do)

Fiberfill stuffing - a small bag

Yarn needle or needle with a very large eye

Size F Crochet hook

Stitch Marker- you can use an earring, piece of scrap yarn, or a paperclip too

12" Wood Dowel 1/2" in diameter or less, or 2-3 pipe cleaners (Optional)

Scrap of black yarn

Abbreviations:

SC= Single Crochet

CH= Chain

SL= Slip Stitch

Dec. = Decrease or 2 together

ST = Stitch

Chain 2.

Round 1: 6 sc in 2nd chain from hook < OR magic ring 6>

Now working in continuous spirals:

Place your stitch marker at the first stitch of each round.

Round 2- 2 SC in each SC around. (12 sc)

Round 3- in back loops only SC around. (12 sc)

Rounds 4 to 23- SC around in BOTH loops. (12 sc)

*** You may want to insert a wood dowel or several pipe cleaners now, to give your flute some rigidity***

Insert stuffing to tightly fill the tube you just made, and around the wood dowel/pipe cleaners as needed

Round 24- SC around in backloops only. (12 sc)

Round 25- SC around both loops. (12 sc)

Round 26 - SC around in backloops only. (12 sc)

Add stuffing to this portion

Round 27- SC around in BOTH loops. (12 sc)

Round 28 to round 50 - SC around (12 sc) Stuffing with fiberfill (around the dowel) as you go

Round 51 - SC in backloops only (12 sc)

Round 52- SC in backloops only. (12 sc)

Round 53 to 66 - SC around (12 sc) Stuffing with fiberfill (around the dowel) as you go

Round 67- SC around in backloops only (12 sc) Add final bit of stuffing as needed.

Round 68- Dec. around. (6 stitches)

Round 69- Dec. around. (3 stitches)

Sew together and finish off. Weave in ends.

Main Keys- make 9.

Ch 2.

Round 1 - 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook.

< OR Magic circle 6>

sl to first sc in round and finish off with a 3" tail for sewing

Small Keys- make 2.

ch 2

Round 1 - 4 sc in 2nd ch from hook

< OR Magic cirlc 4>

sl st to first sc in round and finish off with 3" tail for sewing

Lip Plate - Make 1

with BLACK Yarn - ch 2

Round 1- 4 sc in 2nd ch from hook < OR magic circle 4>, changing to yellow in the last stitch

Round 2 - 2 sc in 1st st. 1 sc in next st. 2 sc in next st. 1 sc in next st. (6 sc)

Round 3 - 2 sc in 1st st. sc in each of next 2 st. 2 sc in next st. sc in each of next 2 st. (8 sc)

Round 4- 2 sc in each of next 2 st. 1 sc in each of next 2 st. 2 SC in each of next 2 st. 1 SC in each of next 2 st. (12 sc)

Round 5 - 1 sc in first stitch. 2 sc in next st. SC in next 4 st. 2 sc in next st. SC in next 5 st. (14sc)

SL ST in next st and finish off with long tail for sewing.

Use the guide photo/chart for help in determining where to sew the keys and mouth plate.

Sew on the lip plate around the 2nd round to the first portion of the flute.

Sew on the two small keys to the middle section of the flute, sewing on the middle of the keys to the body.

Sew on the rest of the keys according to the photo/chart. Sewing on the center of the key only.

Then embroider on a straight line connecting the row of larger keys.
Lastly, embroider on a straight line connecting the two forward keys.
