Link awakens from a deep slumber and a mysterious voice guides him to discover the ruined Hyrule Kingdom. He meets an Old Man who reveals himself as a spirit of the deceased King of Hyrule; King Rhoam. It was sealed within Hyrule Castle by the mysterious voice, which turns out to be Zelda, daughter of King Rhoam and prophesized as the successor of her mother's honorable repute. Although confined, the Calamity has extended in might, and Link must defeat it before it breaks free once more and destroys the world.
As Link advances in his quest to defeat Calamity Ganon, he is inquired to examine the fate of the Divine Beasts and their former Champions. His crowning goal, however, remains to reach the Calamity and free the trapped Princess Zelda before the whole world faces destruction. Moreover, with the entire Kingdom of Hyrule Kingdom to explore, it is Link'ss decision to fulfill his noble role as the Hylian Champion, and to save Hyrule Kingdom.
Gameplay
1. Open World
2. Equipment & Durability
3. Cooking
1. Zelda Breath of the Wild's most unique distinction from all other Zelda titles is its classification as an open world game. It is undoubtedly the largest Zelda game, with a 23.7 square mile explorable terrain. The preponderance of scenery in Hyrule Kingdom is tangible through mechanical features such as climbing, paragliding, teleporting or walking. Additionally, the game allows Link to access any destination of his desire once he obtains the paraglider; in order to leave the great plateau; a large region of land that is sequestered from other segments of Hyrule, due to its slopes preventing the action of progressing to and from it without special equipment. Moreover, his entails that Link can challenge the calamity once he leaves the great plateau. However, this isn't recommended as the game initially intends you to investigate the ancient story of the divine beasts and the rise of calamity ganon 10,000 years ago. Nevertheless, the entry also incorporates barriers (such as weather effects, inhospitable environments or strong enemies), but most of them can be overcome with special equipment and alternate routs. However, there are also indispensable barriers which are found at the edges of the map or the vicinity of defeated divine beasts. Furthermore, the game additionally integrates creative interactions such as cutting down trees and using its raft as a river.
2. Link has the accessibility to various and numerous distinct gear in Breath of the Wild, including Weapons, Bows and Arrows, Shields, and Armor (enables adaption against constant-changing environments). Particularly discernible is the fact that almost all Weapons will break after a certain amount of usage. This durability system enforces the usage of equipment retrieved from enemies. A weapon's conditional state is distinguishable by its depiction in the inventory screen. If it sustained no damage, a sparkle in the top right corner will flash whereas a poorly conditioned weapon will have a flashing red icon, in addition to a brief notification when it is pulled out.
3. A new feature introduced within Breath of the Wild is the mechanic to cook. This allows the production of Food which recovers Hearts and bestows various effects on Link. In order to prepare a meal, five edible materials must be selected from the inventory in front of a heated pot (found predominantly in towns). Elixirs are another product which can be mixed by including monster constituents in various recipes. Link can receive effects such as additional Stamina or Hearts, transitory increase in his defense, attack or speed as well as elemental resistance.
For the sake of audience enjoyment, I have left out key details with regards to the divine beasts and rune abilities.
Items
The Items accessible in Breath of the Wild are of great variety and with distinct and unique abilities. There exists Weapons, Bows & Arrows, Shields, Armor, Materials, Key Items, as well runes, champion powers and additional collectables. However, for the sake of evoking curiosity and to encourage you guys to give this game a try, I will specifically focus on the Weapons, Armor, and Runes available.
Weapons have durabilities and will vanish after their durability is exhausted, meaning that the game imposes on you to try new armaments. This applies to Swords, Bows and Shields. Moreover, as you progress in the game, you will also find stronger and more durable items. Additionally, you will discover weapons with special abilities such as power up or durability up. Concerning Armor, you will be able to explore and purchase these throughout all of Hyrule and the villages which you will tour. Stores as well as challenges in the form of shrines and side quests will also grant the user armor with special abilities; such as protection from hazardous conditions. These collectables can also be enhanced through upgrades at fairy fountains, increasing the strength of the abilities and power of armors.
Materials deserve an own section as they are too vast to fully elaborate on here. The materials and goods which one can attain are spread all across Hyrule; for the interlocutor to explore and collect. Users can sell items for rupees (currency of the game) allowing them to purchase weapons and clothing. Food is also a form of material and can be used for cooking. One can also sell his monster parts, which one obtains from killing monsters in the monster shop; equipping the user with unique items. Overall, the variety is fast, and I will leave it to you to explore.
Rune abilities are key elements which make breath of the wild unique and make the open world experience more user dependent. Runes are unlocked at the beginning of the game, as one can't leave the great plateau without them. The abilities provided are: Bombs, Stasis, Cryonis, and Magnesis. You can also unlock the photo module later on as you progress. Furthermore, you can also upgrade the ruins to make their abilities greater. Moreover, bombs come in two variants; a rectangular and a spherical one. They can be used for breaking obstacles and killing enemies. You can even use them for glitches as well. Stasis is an ability which grants the user the power to freeze a certain object or enemy. The duration is not too long, however. Cryonis is a water dependent tool as it needs water to function. Cryonis creates ice blocks, allowing you to skip or get on top of water areas. Finally, magnesis as the name implies, is a large magnet with which you can move metal objects around. It is also useful for removing obstacles and finding chests.
Locations
Breath of the Wild's map is huge and contains numerous cities and facilities. The game contains 120 shrines which are spread across the entire region of Hyrule. In order to unlock complete accessibility of the entire map, the user has to activate sheikah towers. These towers can be detected from great distances due to their glowing aesthetic. Their number is great, and they are travel points as well (you can teleport not only to shrines but to sheikah towers). These towers additionally provide a name for all the locations in the game. However, for the sake of preventing spoilers; as the name and content of these locations reveal a lot about the game and its story line, i will not elaborate upon them. Despite that objection, I can promise that the world is vast and colorful; assembled to be explored. Furthermore, on your journey you will also meet all types of creatures, challenges, treasures and enemies hidden and extended in all of Hyrule!
Enemies & Creatures
If you are desiring an exciting slaying adventure, ready to eliminate all forms of evil, then Breath of the Wild has got you covered. The aggregate of creatures and evil available in this game is huge and becomes more challenging as you progress. Enemies undergo improvements and will be equipped with greater gear, more health as well as more damage as your world level (hidden to the player) improves; making every battle thrilling. Breath of the Wild offers numerous and various battlefields; such as shrines, open fields and dungeons. The game possesses a total of 7 main bosses, 8 when including the DLC. The number of open enemies is vast and differs depending on your situation. Furthermore, they drop loot and monster parts when defeated. These also vary according to the strength of creatures. Powerful open world enemies such as 'Lynels' and 'Hinoxes' will drop mighty and valuable booty, whereas bokoblins and moblins only drop monster parts and rarely valuable items. You are assured to face off opponents frequently, meaning you must keep your head up! FInally, I recommended to change to gear with special abilities (such as power up) or to consume foods with special abilities in order to ease the fight for those that have difficulty or against main / difficult enemies.
To allow lay-players to experience and face these creatures on their own, I will refrain from listing or describing them.
Conclusion
The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild is an astonishing game which has already made its way in the list of the best games of all time. Its unique open world experience and its combination of classical and new Zelda elements make it stand out as a fan favorite among the Zelda Fan-base. The game is huge, and I have only covered the fundamentals with the intent to encourage this community to explore Hyrule for themselves and defeat the Great Evil which has caused detrimental trouble in the past. The game offers unique abilities, items, enemies, collectables and interactions which I have only briefly touched upon. I can promise that it is worth the hype, I mean it won the "best game" award in 2017, the reviews speak for themselves!
