Sweet Kugel Casserole

Kugel is one of the simplest, strangest, most sensational, and delicious desserts I've ever had. Never heard of it? Think noodle cheesecake. Sounds strange? It is, but it is absolutely delicious. As an added bonus, this recipe is incredibly easy with bulletproof reliability....impossible to mess up (unless you burn it). It is also great with fruit and can be served hot or cold!

This recipe is a modification of some more traditional eastern-european or jewish recipes. Everyone who likes sweets or cheesecakes should give kugel a try! I hope you enjoy!

Supplies

  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) of butter
  • 2 cups (2 bars) of cream cheese
  • 1 cup of sugar
  • 6 eggs
  • 1/4 cup of sour cream
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Dash of ground cinnamon
  • 12 oz bag of medium egg noodles
  • Cooking spray

Preheat Oven

This is the easiest step, preheat your oven to 325 degrees Fahrenheit.....off to a great start!

Know Your Noodle

As the base of this cheesecake casserole, we need to cook our egg noodles. Bring a medium-large pot of water to a boil. Cook the noodles for about 10 minutes, or until slightly firm or al dente...ish.

After boiling, strain the noodles and let cool before mixing in with ingredients. Feel free to rinse them under cold water to cool them down a bit quicker.

Get Creamy

The building blocks of this recipe, use a microwave to soften the butter and cream cheese in a large bowl. Add sugar and mix until creamy.

Some Spice

Add the sour cream, vanilla, and cinnamon to the bowl. For the cinnamon, do what feels right! Can you ever have too much cinnamon? Mix all ingredients until creamy.

Did I Mention There Were Eggs?

Time for the eggs. Whisk the eggs in a separate bowl, then add to the rest of the ingredients. Mix all ingredients until creamy.

Mix Your Noodles

Last mixing step! Pour your cooled noodles in with the rest of the ingredients and mix them in gently with a spoon.

Optional: Many kugels are baked with fruit, now would be the time to add blueberries, strawberries, cherries, apple slices, or whatever! I personally prefer mine plain but fruit kugels are sweet and delicious as well.

After mixing noodles (and fruit), pour all ingredients into a well greased pan.

Time to Bake

Bake the kugel for 45-55 minutes, or until the top starts to brown. If you shake the pan, the kugel should be solid and wiggle slightly, but not be watery. Let the kugel cool for at least 30 minutes before cutting to serve.

Serve Hot or Cold!

Time to eat! Kugel can be served hot, warm, or cold. Personally, I prefer to eat it cold but its pretty delicious any which way, try them all! Keep kugel refrigerated.
