The John McClane Die Hard Christmas Tree Jumper!
We’ve all seen the John McClane guy in the box with a lighter ornament. That was cute, but its time to take Die Hard to a new level of Merry Christmas. I present the best Christmas Tree topper to jump off the top of a tree, the “John McClane Die Hard Christmas Tree Jumper!” And its super easy to do.
Supplies
Absent of any real talent to 3D print anything, primarily because I don’t have one, I sought out looking for 1:6 scale man body from Amazon and 1:6 scale weapons and pants from eBay a coat hanger and shoelaces to make this tribute to the greatest Christmas movie that takes place on Christmas eve that not a Christmas movie, ever made.
Building John McClane
So first I searched for headless 1:6 scale body from Amazon. I then went to eBay and found a 3d head of John McClane’s head on eBay. It came already painted and bloodied. Very realistic!
Then comes the guns. You’ll need an MP5 A3 SMG and of course his Beretta. There is an ebay dealer called ‘actionfirgures4us’ that has all your 1:6 scale weapons at a reasonable price.
Then do a search to find a pair of 1:6 scale pants. Pick what you like. I just used jeans because it came with a belt, but use what you like!
You will soon notice that this all doesn’t come cheap, but the reaction from your friends and family makes it worth it believe me! If you can 3D print all of this stuff off, even better!
The Jumping Rig/firehose
Ok now comes the firehose rig. You will need a 1 piece wire coat hanger. It has to be the whole wire coat hanger without the cardboard tube. Take the coat hanger and from the bottom pull it straight and fold it in half. Now twist the hanger 5-7 times. Get a piece of masking tape and wrap it near the hook on the spiral to cover it up to prevent snagging the shoelace in the next step.
Threading the Shoelace
Now you will need an pair of flat white shoelaces for sneakers. Make sure they are the kind that are flat tube rather than just a cheap flat shoelace. I bought Sechuck Flat Shoelace for hightops off Amazon. Measure the straightened out coat hanger including the hook and add 9 -10 inches extra for the shoelace. Now cut the shoelace at the bottom, not the top. Leave the aglet on the shoelace. Now thread the coat hanger from the top hook carefully down to the bottom.
The aglet will serve as the fire hose coupler. If you want to add a bit of realism, you can go to Lowes in the plumbing section and buy a 1/4 brass Delrin compression sleeve and hot glue it to the shoelace aglet. If you can’t find one, then just paint it brass or gold.
Hooking Up the Jumper
Take the coat hanger hook and bend it around the body. Try to get this as tight as possible to hold the figure. Then with the extra 9-10 inches of shoelace with the brass or painted end, wrap it around the body twice covering the hard wire hook and then tuck it into itself.
Finishing It Off
Now make a curve in the back of the coat hanger. Put on the head and give him his guns. Then get a few nylon zip ties or some wire and attach it to the top of your tree.
And there you go! Guaranteed to be the envy of everyone!
Merry Christmas Mutha Truckers!
