A bold, whimsical DIY hat made from upcycled materials — perfect for festivals, costumes, and fierce statement looks.
Supplies
Supplies You’ll Need:
1 large plastic tote lid (for brim)
1 lampshade (base of hat)
Craft wire
Aluminum foil tape
Masking tape
Scissors & utility knife
Wire cutters
Cardstock or thick paper (for top cap)
Hot glue gun & glue sticks
Spray paint or fabric (to cover surfaces)
Decorative items:
Faux flowers
Butterflies
Feathers
Ribbon
✨ Rhinestones, gems, etc.
The Base/brim

1. Cut Out the Brim
Take the tote lid and draw a large oval shape. This will be your hat brim.
Use scissors or a utility knife to cut the shape out.
Then cut a smaller oval in the center to fit the lampshade base—this is where the crown will be attached.
Crown

Attach the Lampshade (Crown)
Flip the lampshade upside down.
Poke small holes around the bottom edge of the lampshade and the inner edge of the brim.
Use craft wire to twist and secure the lampshade to the brim through the holes. Twist tight for stability.
Reinforce connection points with masking tape if needed.
Create the Top Cap

Cut a round circle from cardstock to close off the top of the hat.
Attach it with hot glue or tape.
Optional: Wrap or paint it to match the rest of the hat.
Strengthen & Line

Use foil tape to line the inside for extra hold and a finished look.
Cover the brim and lampshade with fabric, or paint them for a cleaner, vibrant finish.
Decorate Like Royalty

Hot glue flowers, feathers, butterflies, and any embellishments you like.
Layer large pieces toward the back/top for drama.
Add ribbon, lace, or trim around the crown for polish.
💡 Tips & Tricks:
Use a mannequin or your head as a fit test before finalizing.
Want a more secure fit? Add elastic, a headband, or inner padding.
Go wild—this hat is all about fantasy flair!
