The Elephant Toothpaste Experiment

unnamed (12).jpg

Hello and welcome to my Elephant Toothpaste experiment. My name is Phoenix Sinclair and I really like doing experiments and making things with my family. I am doing this for a 7th grade science project and seeing how high or wide I can make my blast radius of foam, by using different funnels and bottles. I was inspired to do this experiment off or a video I watched on Youtube and though it could be something fun to do whenever I have free time.

Starting the Engines

I did some research on how I would start the reaction on Youtube. And got to mixing the materials.

Getting the Materials

We had to buy a bottle of hydrogen peroxide, box of dry yeast,we had water at home, dish soap, food coloring, a 2 liter bottle and a few different sized funnels to be able to conduct the experiment.

First Steps

So first what I did was take 1/2 cup hydrogen peroxide and put it into the container. Next you want to do 2 big squirts of dish soap into the funnle or cup.

The Final Steps Before BOOM

Add as many pumps of food coloring as you want more for darker colors and less for lighter colors I did about 4 for a pretty light/ dark color combo. The food coloring is what makes the experiment cool and colorful, otherwise the fun is kinda dry. Next add 2/3 water and 1/3 yeast.

This is just about the time I had to take my phone out and snap a few pictures of the reaction.

The Funnels

I had 2 different funnels in the beginning and they came out pretty much just how I expected them too. There was a lot that came out of the first funnel, the Downey bottle, but it came out extremely slow and we had to wait about 5 minutes for it to finally be completely out of the nozzle. Then with the smaller hand sanitizer bottle it came out a lot quicker and was very cool because it started spewing everywhere.

Getting More Materials UHHH

I didnt have enough materials so me and my mom had to run to the nearest store and get some more

2nd Time Through

I repeated all of the steps and experimented with another funnel from a 2 liter bottle.

Success!!!

The first try with the big bottle was complete and did pretty well.

So Close But to Far

The second experiment on the big funnel got super close but failed pretty bad.

Finishing Up

AND THE WINNER ISSSSSSS!!!!!!! THE SMALLEST FUNNELLLLL. Out of all three funnels the smallest one was the best for how fast the reaction came out of it and how high it got at first. Second place goes to the 2 liter bottle for being way too slow after I added the yeast. And 3rd place was the downey bottle for not having any cool explosion also it was very slow on the exit.
