The Dancing Raisins Experiment

The dancing raisins experiment is a classic science experiment that demonstrates chemistry. By using the chemical properties of baking soda and vinegar, you can make raisins bob up and down in a glass. Today I will show you how it works, and how to do it!

How It Works

It is actually pretty simple how this experiment works. Because of the reaction between the baking soda and vinegar, carbon dioxide is created. The CO2 creates bubbles on the ridges on the raisins, which increases its buoyancy, causing it to float. But when the raisins get to the top, the bubbles pop, causing them to sink to the bottom. It is actually a pretty interesting cycle of the raisins going up and down, and it is fun to watch, too. Now, here is how you do it!

For this experiment you will need:
- Raisins
- A Glass
- Baking Soda
- Vinegar

Put 3 teaspoons of baking soda in the glass. Then put a layer of raisins over top of the baking soda.

Gradually add 1 cup of vinegar to the glass. After the fizz settles, you should be able to see the raisins bop up and down. I have included a few pictures showing how it looks over time. The raisins may bob for over twenty minutes, so get comfortable if you want the full experience. Well, that was my instructable! I hope you liked this cool chemistry experiment.
