Wood .... possibly the best building material available out there for DIYers.

So, what could be better than making yourself a classic wooden clock out of just a spare clock mechanism and a spare piece of lumber.

In this project we are going to built a Classy Wall Clock from scratch. The design is a square shaped clock which is made of nine squares cut directly out of a log.

Required Materials

The materials that are required for this project are as follows:

  • A Clock mechanism (probably from an old clock)
  • clock needles including accessories
  • Lumber log 3in*1in (2 ft long)
  • 5mm thick plexi glass sheet
  • Eye-shaped screw
  • Varnish and staining powder.

Moreover, the required tools for this project are as very few and thus the job can only be done with a hand saw, a drill and a screw driver.

Cutting the Wooden Blocks

We start with cutting down square pieces out of our lumber log. The dimensions of each piece are as follows:

  • Length: 3 inch
  • Width: 3 inch
  • Height: 1 inch

A total of 10 pieces were cut down on our miter saw by making a temporary jig by placing a wooden log such that each piece cuts down to the required size that is 3 inch.

Out of these 10 pieces we put down 9 pieces offering the best wooden figures. All the pieces were then arranged in the required shape and the design seems to look nice.

Sanding

Each piece is than sanded to produce a neat and smooth finish. Each side is sanded down to 500 grit sand paper and the whole job is nicely done with an orbital sander which makes the process fluent.

The Centre Piece

The centre piece was made hollow so to fix the clock mechanism inside. In order to maintain the wooden pattern we have cut down both front and rear pieces out of the solid block cut down in the start.

The sides were made out of bidding stripes measuring 5mm thick and 20mm wide. The four side pieces were first cut down on miter saw and the glued to the front piece.

A hole is drilled in the centre of the front plate to enable the knob of clock mechanism to pass through aswell as to mount the whole mechanism inside the centre box.

The centre box is then sanded along with the rear piece.

To finish up the wooden blocks, I have used multiple coats of varnish(polyurethane) mixed with a bit of staining powder to give everything a bit darker look.

First each wooden block is cleaned down using a clean cloth and then applied 2 to 3 coats of this mix.

This give the pattern on each wooden block an attractive look and moreover it secured the wood from wether damage.

Making the Back Plate

To hold everything together i need a back plate. To keep the design as neat a possible i have decided to use a 5mm thick plexi glass sheet. A 6 inch square piece is cut down using a jig saw.

Later the holes are marked down and drilled using a 4 mm drill bit. Now each wooden block is mounted on the plexi glass sheet by using two wooden screws while using four screws for the centre piece.

To finish the centre piece, the clock mechanism is screwed down in place using the provided brass washer and bolt. A standard AA cell is inserted in place and the mechanism in started by putting the switch ON. The box is then mounted on the plexi glass sheet.

Later the clock needles are mounted on the front knob ensuring the correct time as we now can now set the time manually from the clock mechanism since the whole mechanism is now packed.

The whole idea turned out to be outstanding.The final product proved to be extremely aesthetically pleasuring.
