The Budget Breeze: a DIY Cooling Solution
Sometimes, necessity sparks creativity. One particularly challenging summer, our air conditioner broke down. It was the height of a stressful month, and replacing it wasn’t an option at the time. My brother and I, desperate for some relief from the heat, decided to create our own cooling solution. It wasn’t fancy, but it worked—and it became a symbol of resourcefulness and teamwork. We called it "The Budget Breeze," and it helped us stay cool and keep our spirits high.

Supplies
- A standard electric fan
- Plastic cups (disposable, lightweight, and easy to cut)
- Zip ties (strong enough to secure the cups to the fan)
- Ice cubes or crushed ice
- A bucket or a wide container (to catch the melting ice water)
- A sharp knife or scissors (for cutting holes in the cups)
Prepare the Fan
- Use a standard electric fan, ensuring it's in good working condition.
- Clean the fan blades for optimal airflow.
Modify the Cups
- Take several plastic cups and cut small holes in them using a knife or scissors. The holes will allow air to flow freely while chilling it over the ice.
- Make sure the holes are evenly spaced around the cups.
Attach the Cups to the Fan
- Using zip ties, secure the cups around the front grille of the fan.
- Arrange the cups so that they are evenly distributed to maintain balance and prevent wobbling.
Add Ice
Fill each cup with ice cubes or crushed ice. Be mindful not to overfill them, as the melting ice could spill over.
Place the Bucket
- Position a bucket or wide container directly under the fan to catch any water dripping from the melting ice. This step is crucial to keep your floor dry and safe.
Turn It On
- Turn on the fan and enjoy the refreshing burst of cool air as it flows through the ice-filled cups.
- Refill the ice as needed to keep the cooling effect going.
Tips for Optimization
If you have access to reusable ice packs, they can work even better than ice cubes and reduce water waste.
Experiment with fan speeds to find the balance between airflow and cooling efficiency.
For added comfort, try adding a few drops of essential oil to the ice for a light fragrance.
