The Art of Mac

This is a tutorial to disassemble a Macbook pro 2.16 (MA601LL).

This guide cannot be used to reassemble it again.

You will need the following Toolset: iFixit from iFixit.com.
Containing the following bits: Phillips 00, JIS J000 and Torx TR6

Throughout the toturial whenever we mention heating up a component, you can simply use a hairdryer, or a heating pistol if you have one of those.

Flip the laptop upside down.

Click the buttons to release the battery and then remove it.

The battery is sealed with the glue.

You can warm it to reduce the integrity of the glue and thereby disassemble it, or you can use brute force and tools to remove the cover from the battery.

Unscrew all the small screws in the side of the laptop and in the battery slot.

You are now able to lift off the upper case. (keyboard and mousepad panel)

First you have to remove the black plastic which is on the opposite side of the keyboard.

Underneath you will find a few screw you need to remove.

Along the edges of the keyboard there are some locks which need to flip in order to be able to remove the keyboard.

The mousepad is glued on, so you simply have to warm it up a bit and then press it out.

Once you have removed the keyboard from the panel, it quite easily comes apart.

A word of caution, the keys themselves are composed of 3 individual pieces each.

Behind the keyboard there is 5 different sheets of materials.

Remove the screws connected to the hard drive, and the wire connected to it.

You are now able to remove it from the Macbook

Remove the screws from the bottom of the HDD, when you remove the cover plate you will see a print-circuit-board (PCB).

Removing the PCB reveals the interior, the disks and the reading module.

There are 4 screws connected to the DVD-Rom. Remove these, and the drive will come out without a fuss.

Remove all the screws and each part will come apart nice and easy.

The wires are glued to the back panel, but easy to remove.

Disconnect all the wires and unscrew all the screw, connected to the motherboard.

It is farily easy to remove, and contains the following hardware: CPU, GPU and RAM.

The RAM's are easy to remove, before or after you remove the motherboard from the case.

Once again, these are only screwed in place with a few screws. So you remove these and simply remove the cooler-section from the case.

Disassembling the cooler fans, is done by removing the 3 screws on the back panel. This reveals a circuit board.

The circuit board is attached to a DC engine, and the fan it self has a magnet ring, you should be able to remove the circuit board without any tools needed.

The multimedia HUB is placed on the left side of the macbook.

It is connected to the lower case with a few screws, removing these allows you to remove the multimedia HUB from the case.

The screen itself is connected to the case with 4 screws at the bottom of the screen frame. Once you've removed these screws the screen can be lifted off.

This is a delicate process as some of the parts are glued and pressed together.

Firstly you want to remove all the screws from the frame, which connect the screen to it. Once this is done you will have to delicately break the frame off the screen. If you do this to harshly the interior of the screen might break.

The rest of the components in the screen are glued or pressed together, heating up the parts will deterioate the integrity off the glue, and the parts should come apart easier.

We wanted to make sure we had a display that made it easy to see the different parts of the Macbook, while simultaniously keeping the integrity of where the components were placed in the Macbook. We took inspiration in "The Body Experience".

First of all we prepared the drawing for the board in CAMBAM, with the precise measurements of how we wanted our display to look like.

We used the CNC cutter to make sure the board was exactly as we had made the drawing in CAMBAM.

The board was ment to keep the components of the Macbook, while we were still able to remove it from the board, and look at it.

We have the following sections on our board:
1: Keyboard, mousepad, upper and lower case and frame for the screen.
2: Print circuit boards, cooling, and multimedia HUB.
3: HDD and DVD-rom
4: Wires
5: Battery and antenna
6: TFT LCD Scree
7: Diffusion plates, Flourescent tube, Back plate.
8: Aluminum screen case.

All components on the Plexi-glass, are glued or taped on with double sided clear tape. And all the way through we made sure the components were placed on the glass, as it would have been in the Macbook, in proportion to each other.
