The 3d Printed Bilboquet a Dexterity Game
A Bilboquet is a traditional french dexterity game. It seems to be originating from the XVI century
It became popular under Henri III who loved to play that game and introduced it to his court
The game is very basic and require the dexterity. The stick is wired with the ball and then you need to throw this in the air to make the ball land on the stick perfectly
I really wonder how this is going to be reacting as a 3d printed part. Usually this is made of raw wood and then more then heavy
Supplies
For this we will be printing all the parts and therefore all you need is filament
I'll make it easy as a 2 parts print, so this is going to be very easy to print
And of course you will need to link the 2 parts.
In my version I added some difficulty as I have linked the 2 parts with an elastic, instead of a cord? then you need to also manage the elasticity to get the ball flying as you expect
Design of the Ball
I start the design of the object by the ball, this is going to be the master part of the object.
It is the flying part, this is going to be thrown in the air, therefore the part might need to get some rework to ensure the balance
To ensure the balance I always use the align tool, so all the centers are going to be aligned and I use only primitives that are already balanced
Therefore I use only spheres and for the fun I will combine it with a fun form that I found in the palette
This will make the ball more fun, but will also influence how the ball will fly in the air.
Once that I have aligned the 2 forms, then I am assembling the whole together
Design of the Stick
For the stick that you need to hold in your hand, I have chosen to use a cylinder and 2 torus for the holding part.
Then I start with the cylinder and I made it to a sufficient size to be hold in a hand
Then I align the whole and make the 2 torus attached on the top and bottom of the cylinder.
Once that I have the basic form of the stick I am design the part on which the ball will need to land.
I made 2 of the same kind with a bit of a larger size, the larger part will be added to the ball to make the fit Ok for the landing
Make the Ball Percing to Fit on the Stick
For the ball to be able to land on the stick, we need to make hole big enough on the bottom of it
so the forms are aligned and then assembled
Make a Wire Holder on the Ball
To make sure that a wire can be made and that a simple knot can make the ball hold
So I do include a sphere with a smaller hole on it. so I make a 4mm hole on the sphere and make in central
Once that I have the sphere, :I am then arranging the sphere and the ball together to make it a balanced form too
Finish the Stick
To Finish the stick, I then need to make the stick head to be able to hold the ball once landing
so I take the smaller piece that I made and combine it with the stick already assembled
Once that the head is complete (Piece in white)
Then I need to place a whole on the side of the stick to be able to connect the 2 pieces.
I have then made a cylinder of 4mm that I tilted by 45° and then made it aligned on the side of the stick
Then to really finish the stick, I made also a small hole on the bottom of the stick to be able to hide the knot of the wire and make it possible to hold the stick and the ball together vertically and not being disturbed by the wire
Printing the Models
Now that i have the 2 pieces design, I need to print the design and make them wired to enjoy it
Removing the Support
Once the print is done then you need to remove the support that have been created during the print.
The stick is having a support that is completely around the core of the object.
Concerning the ball, you will need to get some patience as the removal of the inside support can be a bit tricky (this is the first part of the game isn't it?)
Wire the Ball to the Stick
The wiring is very easy, just make sure that the lace is not exceeding the 4mm diameter to fit in the holes that have been designed.
Enjoy the Game
Now you can enjoy the game, normally there is only one hole ;-)
But to make more chance to make it I have multiplied the holes so the probability is raised a bit... this is not cheating isn't it? ;-)
