Looking to create a quick rainbow for Pride or your next party?

YuKonstruct volunteers made this rainbow canopy out of old tent poles, wire and plastic tablecloths, and used it on our Pride parade float. It would also look great over a table for a birthday party or other event!

YuKonstruct is the first makerspace in Canada's north. Our mission is to provide access to shared space, quality tools, available expertise, and a collaborative environment to help makers build anything!

Materials

For this rainbow, you'll need:

  • 2 flexible tent poles of equal length
  • plastic table cloth in the colours of the rainbow (we used the type that comes on a roll)
  • thin wire or fishing line
  • clear tape (scotch tape or packing tape)

Make an Arch

Cross the tent poles and tie them together at the middle point with wire or string.

Using wire or fishing line, tie together the tent poles at the metal connections so it will hold the shape of a dome. It is helpful to have some extra hands for this step!

To prevent the wire from slipping, you can secure it in place with tape.

Add Colours

Starting on one side, tape the plastic table cloth material over the lowest wire. Follow the ROY G BIV rainbow order (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo/violet/purple).

Bring the cloth up to the highest point of the arch and tie it in place.

Cut off the excess table cloth material and tape it over the lowest wire on the opposite side.
