Make a Pattern for the Tabletop

You can buy tabletops that fit this lunch box, but we had some nice scrap hard wood that would make a great top. So I went to work creating one.

I started by tracing the top onto cardboard, and working out the sizing. So you don't have to figure it out, I have made a template available as a free download.

Make the Tabletop

We used the cardboard template and traced it onto the hardwood and cut it out the shape on the table saw.

Next, we cut the top in half. This is so both of the pieces will easily store back in the lunch box after use.

With the scroll saw we rounded out the corners.

We used a palm router to smooth out all the edges. It's not necessary but it looks really good this way.

In the top of the lunch box is a wire that holds the thermos in place. When the tabletop is in place it needs to sit against this wire. We put the tabletop in place and marked where we needed to cut the top so that it will sit flush against the wire. These we cut out with the scroll saw.

To finish the top, we used cutting board oil which really brought out the grain of this hardwood.

A late addition to the tabletop was this small wood dowel. When the tabletop was in use it tended to slip a bit so we added the wood dowels on each side to correct the problem.

Make It Your Own!

I personalized my Stanley lunch box with vinyl stickers made on a cricuit maker. You'll see a kayak, greyhound, nature, and a nod to DIY.

For the top, we chose designs that still look correct when the box is open rather than having a graphic that was upside down when the box is in the open position.

Fill It With Your Favorite Things!

Here is a look inside the tea box. You can see everything fits, including a stove to heat water, 4 loose leaf tea selections, a travel tea set, and snacks! Everything was chosen so that it was what we needed but it all would fit compactly into the lunchbox.

We can also trade out the tea to-go for s'mores to-go! Everything you need to take to your next picnic or campout goes with you in the box. With the food safe fuel, you can also make s'more right in your living room!
