Table That Can Be Turned Into a Chair and a Storage Unit

This is a classroom project where I made the furniture out of a plywood, mostly collected from the scrap and left over pieces found in the Wood workshop. I designed two different storage units that can be used together or individually.

This furniture can be completed in a day or two with simple materials.

Here, I would like to thank all the staff members starting from the wood till the paint workshop and also my guide who guided me through the entire process of making.

Note: In case you don't have a sander, just use a file or sandpaper.

Draw the above mentioned dimensions on plywood board.

You need four triangular pieces for making table top and base.

• Cut two square pieces of 92 X 92 and cut it diagonally, hence you get four separate pieces.
• Cut four more pieces of 50.80 X 46.75 with an ergonomic groove of 11.47 X 5.08 at one of its side.
• Lastly cut four more pieces of 50.80 X 46.75.

Two plywoods were joined end to end to by using stapler and later hammered using zigzag pins to hold together (I had to join them as I couldn't find big spare piece of plywood for making the table top and base).

Later the pieces were cut diagonally into two parts from one unit. Here I have used the Circular saw to cut the pieces.

The other square pieces were cut using Panel saw machine.

Cut out a filleted rectangle (11.47 X 5.08 cm) from the plywood board using a router machine or jigsaw.

But before cutting the piece out from the plywood, just make sure to drill a hole suitable enough so that the teeth of the router machine or jigsaw you are using gets through and through.

Later you can use flat and half round file to finish the edges and surface of the handle groove.

The edges and roughness of the plywood are smoothened using a planer machine.

Using hammer and nails, the plywood planks are joint end to end 90°.

Using a hand held sander machine clean the entire surface to get it smooth.

Fill the broken, dents or gaps on the any of the surface using putty and later scrap it off when gets dried.

The product is almost half a way to reach its final look!

Get it first coated with primer. Once application of primer is done, sand the whole surface slightly using sand paper (Make sure not to remove the entire coat of primer, therefore sand it gently!)

Once sanding is done, you can apply the paint.

Note: Here, on my furniture I have used water based paint to get the matte finish surface. I used the duo tone to show color interaction. Black matte on outer surface and Neon green on inner surface.

Water based paints dry faster than the oil based paints.

You can clearly see the color codes. The outer part is black and inner part as green.

Now, you can play around with the furniture and form different ways of creatively combinations. May be a chair, a step, a table , a storage....anything!
