“TREE FROG” - MOSAIC
“Mosaic” is a form of art that uses tiny parts to create a whole image. Mosaics date date all the way back to 300BC.
Mosaics usually use small or random sized tiles that are made of glass, stone, or other materials. Typically the tiles are square, round or randomly shaped. A lot of time and effort goes into the finished artwork.
Regardless of how simple or intricate the design is, the result is worth the effort.

PREPARATION
1. Find a photo of the
TREE FROG 🐸
2. Print The photo To fit the
24” x 24” x 3/4” board.
3. Transfer the paper print onto
the board using the
markers.
4. Mark the areas where the
specific color and/or shapes
of glass tiles or glass beads
will be applied.

GLASSWORK - FLAT GLASS
WEAR SAFETY GLASSES WHEN SCORING AND SNAPPING THE GLASS.
1. Start scoring and cutting the glass for placement on the board.
2. Do the same for all the glass colors: reflective glass, blue, green, orange, yellow, white, brown, sparkle green.
3. Fit the glass so that they interlock according to the design drawn. Leave a small space (1/16-1/8”) between adjacent glass pieces. This will give the mosaic look.
4. Once the fitment is correct, spread WELDBOND glue onto the wood. Only spread the glue in small sections at a time.
5. Press the glass onto the wet glue so that the glass pieces interlock. The space between the pieces of glass should vary but not to an extreme.
6. Let the newly placed glass pieces set into the glue for at least 8-12 hours.
7. Look at pictures for additional views.
8. I started at the bottom and worked my way up to the top. 9. First, I scored, snapped and glued down the Reflective glass intermixed with blue reflective glass.
10. Next I drew out the TREE FROG 🐸 perched on a tree limb.
GO TO STEP 12 and 13 then proceed to step # 11.
11. I scored and cut the speckled green, gray, brown and orange glass to resemble the FROG and TREE LIMB. After the glass is laid out, remove a section at a time, spread the WELDBOND GLUE onto the wood section and then press in place all the glass pieces named in step #11.
NOTE: The TREE FROG eyes were made separately using a process of “fusing glass”. 12 A. Cut 2 eyeball shapes
using white glass.
B. Cut 2 pupils using BLACK
glass.
C. Layer each black pupil
on top of each WHITE
glass.
D. Place an RED millifiori
onto the black glass
pupil.
E. Take the 2 assemblies
and fuse them in a
glass shop.
Approximately 1000
degrees F. This step
must be done by an
experienced trained
professional.
13. Glue down EYES onto the
wood using WELDBOND
GLUE.
14. Let this above step set for
8 hours.
15. Using ShinyGreen glass
score, cut and glue.
16. Next: In the top left corner,
a Sun ☀️ will be formed
from gold, yellow and
orange glass.
17. Layout the colors to your
liking. Score, snap and
arrange the glass colors to
represent the Sun 🌞.
18. Glue down the Sun glass
pieces in step #17.
19. At the top, and to the right
of the sun, use the
multicolor bluish-green
glass to resemble the
“sky”.
20. Score, snap and arrange
the glass pieces on the
board to resemble the
sky. Glue down the glass.

GLASS BEADS - ASSORTED
WEAR SAFETY GLASSES WHEN SCORING OR SNAPPING GLASS BEADS
1. Lay out approximately 70,
3/8” - 1/2” glass beads,
horizontally above the water
lines. (Clear, purple, Light
green and light blue.)
2. Pick up beads, put glue
down and press glass
beads in place.
3. Lay out and glue down
approximately 300 white
hex glass beads as part of
the TREE FROG 🐸 jaw and
chin.
4. Lay out and glue down
approximately 300 assorted
dark green and lime green
1/4” glass beads below tree
limb.
5. Lay out and glue down the
unfinished area with
additional 1/4” glass beads.
(Clear, light yellow, Light
green and dark green).
Approximately 965 beads.

GROUT THE MOSAIC
Allow the glued down mosaic to dry throughly (8-12 hours) prior to grouting the TREE FROG.
1. Clean all glass and beads.
Remove any excess glue
from all surfaces.
2. CAUTION: ⚠️ When wiping
glass, there are sharp edges
on glass! ⚠️ Use gloves to
minimize/avoid cuts. 🧤
3. You can use a single-edge
blade to remove excess
glue off of glass.
4. Get a 2# container of
Jennifer’s powder grout
(sand or unsanded) white.
5. FIRST: Grout the FROG and
TREE LIMB.
Mix Sandstone colorant
into white grout. Follow
manufacturer instructions
on the grout and colorant
containers.
6. White grout is mixed 3:1.
Three (3) parts grout to one
part clean cold water 💧.
7. Add sandstone colorant to
white mixture. Add more
for a darker color result.
Mixture should be smooth
and thick. NOT runny.
8. Tape off the area to be
grouted (sandstone). This
should prevent grout from
running over onto the areas
which will later be grouted
white.
8. Put on rubber gloves 🧤.
9. Pour some grout onto the
glass. Use your finger to
spread the grout into the
spaces in between the
glass.
Excess grout should be
removed before it dries.
10. Allow grout to dry for
10-15 minutes then wipe
off powder down to glass.
11. Let sandstone grout
completely dry overnight
before applying the white
grout.
12. Tape off the area of the
sandstone grout.
13. Mix a batch of white grout
according to step #6.
14. HINT: Grout one
area/section at a time.
Complete the flat glass
areas first.
REPEAT STEPS 8-10.
15. After the flat glass is
completely grouted and
cleaned, start on grouting
the beads. Once again, do
one area at a time.
16. Repeat step # 10.
17. Allow grout to dry
overnight, thoroughly.
18. Remove the tape from the
masked off area.
19. Take a clean Cloth and buff
the entire face of the
mosaic.

FINAL STEPS
1. Finish the outer (4) edges of
the 24” x 24” board, Using
1” x 1” tiles. I used
approximately 96 tiles of
different shades of brown.
2. Glue down tiles using
WELDBOND adhesive. You
may need to use blue tape
to hold tiles in place until
they set.
3. After tiles are set, tremor
tape, mix white grout or
add colorant, your choice.
4. Apply grout to the edge tile
gaps. Wait 15 minutes and
wipe off excess. Let dry
overnight.
HANGER:
5. On the back side of the
mosaic board, screw two
small D-hooks (see picture)
and stretch twisted copper
wire attached to both.
6. Glue a PENNY on the back
as my signature.
7. If you hang the MOSAIC outdoors, I
would recommend that a MINWAX
Polyurethane semi-gloss coating be
brushed on the back. (Wood side)

REFLECTIONS
“Enjoy the fruits of your labor. “
Mosaics takes a lot of planning, but well worth the effort. Sometimes it becomes frustrating and additional cuts and recuts are necessary. Rest, take a deep breath, and proceed slowly. Often, changes are made on the fly, but at the “end of the day” the results are worth the wait.
Never give up!
