No one kicks more butt than the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Although there are four of them, everyone has a favorite. If his suiting up as the TMNT this Halloween or convention season, don't forget your character's signature weapon. Create Michelangelo's Nunchucks with the help of this tutorial by Wholesale Halloween Costumes.

Supplies

NunchuckSupplies.jpg

  • 1/2” x 4′ tube pipe insulation (found at most hardware stores)
  • 4 – 1/2”x 8” diameter wood dowels
  • 2 – 6” pieces of plastic chain (found at most hardware stores)
  • Metallic silver spray paint
  • 4 – Large eye hooks (large enough to fit the width of link on the chain)
  • Cutting pliers
  • Drill Scissors or box cutter
  • Tan, silver, dark grey duct tape

Create the Sticks

NunchukStep01.jpg

Using the cutting pliers, cut an opening in the last link of each end of the chains.

Spray paint the chains silver, let dry.

Use the drill to make a hole in one end of each dowel. The holes should be large enough for the eye hooks.

Attach an eye hook to the end of each dowel.

Cover With Insulation

NunchukStep02.jpg

Cut the pipe insulation to the length of each dowel. Wrap each dowel in the pipe insulation.

Cut a 1/2” piece of foam tubing. Cut out a chunk of the tubing so that it resembles the “letter C”, as shown.

Use the cut piece of insulation to wrap around the base of the eye hook.

Cover the tubing and the base of the eye hook with silver duct tape.

Add the Details

NunchukStep03.jpg

Wrap the nunchucks handle in tan duct tape. For a cleaner look, I applied my duct tape vertically, in 3 long pieces.

Cut a piece of grey duct tape (approximately 12” long), and fold in half lengthwise. The tape should stick to itself.

Cut and fold 3 more pieces of grey duct tape. Tape one end of a piece of folded duct tape, to the top of the nunchucks, handle. Wrap the folded tape around the handle at an angle, and tape at the base, as shown. Rotate the handle, and wrap the second piece of folded duct tape around the handle, as shown.

Repeat these steps applying the tape in the opposite direction. When complete the tape will create a woven look on the handle.

Attach the Pieces

NunchukStep04.jpg

Cover the bottom of the handle with a piece of silver duct tape. Wrap a ½ “ strip of silver duct tape around the base of the handle for a finished look.

Wrap the top of the handle with another ½” strip of silver duct tape. Attach one end of the chain to the eye hook, by gently pulling open the cut link and then bending the link closed.

To finish the nunchucks repeat steps 6-16, and attach the 2nd handle to the chain. Complete the set of nunchucks by repeating the above steps to create a second nunchucks.
