THE GRINCH Latex Mask
We are now in November, soon it'll be that time again... where the meanie in green upnorth WHO-VILLE will steal your Christmas gifts, who-rice,who-dice and who- puddin, ... so why not dress like the GRINCH by making a latex disguise I like to call it or just treat up mask and other props included too... so get your two sizes too smalls hearts and tight socks in gear ... we are making a Grinch mask.
Supplies
- Air drying clay
- polsternye head piece
- 1/2 litre bottle of latex
- acrylic paint
- 4x sheets of green felt fabric
- clay sculpting tools
- green tinsel
- green morph suit
- EXTRA (sewing machine/hot glue gun)
THE BEGINNING
First of all ... get as many reference of the grinch you'll like to make, whether it's the cartoon from Chuck Jones, the Jim Carrey, the Mean one or the original one by DR.Seuss ... so I went with the Jim Carrey one and got on with it... by using a polystyrene head and use air drying clay (make sure you have a good amount of water to put on the finer details on your clay sculpture) I forgot to mention, use sculpting tools for sculpting the face of the Grinch I used "fimo sculpting ones" as they are a plastic strong and with different shapes types... but metal or wood ones will just do fine.
THE MIDDLE
Now the sculpt is dry and hard...it's time for the sticky, icky part, applying the latex liquid on the sculpture ...first make sure your brushes are clean with no knots or stains on them... now you can use one litre or two litre bottle of Latex, just the right amount to do ten layers on your sculpture.
So first things first, brushing your sculpture, I use a medium size wall brush for the first four or five layers of latex, then leave it to dry a little then apply acrylic paint, of course you gotta apply the green details and other details like his nose colour and brow colour and etc ... then you add the final touches of layer of latex on the sculpture, wait for 24 hours in other words all day and then "VoilĂ " you've finally completed making a latex mask version of your Grinch sculpture.
THE EXTRA
If you are willing to go feather into the grinch look, why not make some grinch glove like fingers, out of green felt.
All you need is 4x sheets of green felt, A4 or A3 size, just for that long fingers feature, place your hand in the centre of the felt, draw the grinch fingers outline on the material with two sheets with each other.
cut out the hands and hot glue them together ( better use sewing machine, mine were sewed together luckily my mother was good at use it i wasn't) do the same thing with the other hand of course and you got a pair of grinch hand gloves.
THE FINALE
Now the Sculpture is dry from ten layers of liquid latex, you can now pull the latex mask of the clay sculpture, but please be cautious and patent as it can be very tricky to pull of then one go... and uncertain things will come of like the swift of grinch hair from the sculpt and other clay parts and extract of latex from the surroundings of the sculpture.
SO USE SCISSORS of cutting off the extra latex stuff do you want on your Grinch mask, you could however wash off extra bits inside the mask and dry it with a towel and add some elastic straps on the side of the interior of the mask so it can be held... (But to let you know when making this for the first time in 2014, I actually wanted this to be a make-up appliance, so I use spirit-gum to glue to my face, when making a short film, but Like I said you can attach elastic string to the conners of the mask to be held in place when wearing it or connect it to a green hero latex mask, which I made previously or after ... here's links to make that particular mask
https://www.instructables.com/Batman-Latex-Mask/
OR you can attach the Grinch mask and Hero mask with goggles or a hot glue gun if wanted stay perminants but be careful, always have someone to do it with you if your not that sure to do it.)
SO now you are ready to steal Christmas, so now you some green tights or morph suit with or a felt fur green suit and Santa Suit to be the Green mean one ... the green tinsel was just for extra fur type with your morph suit you accessories anything you desire, That's why I did two versions of the Grinch like a sequel or and epic movie.
So Try it yourself and have fun.
NOW GO OUT THERE BE a GRINCH !!!
TRY AND BE CREATIVE AS YOU CAN BE AND NEVER STOP FOR NO ONE!!
