T-Shirt Bib

Recently, my wife and I were on vacation in Acadia National Park with our 2-month-old. We wanted a souvenir shirt for her, but of course a) there are no shirts that small for sale and b) she grows too fast to make it worth it. So I hit upon the idea of making a bib from a larger t-shirt.

Gather Your Materials

What you will need:

1 small t-shirt (I used a youth XS for this project)

backing fabric (Either fleece or terry cloth. I used fleece for this project.)

sew-on snap (I used size 4)

scissors

pins

thread

needle

sewing machine

Cut Up the Shirt

At this point, you want to cut wide of your mark, so be fairly broad with your cuts.

1) Cut the bottom of the shirt off. If you do this right, you end up with a circle of already-hemmed fabric which you can use as a skirt on a onesie.

2) Cut off the arms.

3) Cut around the image, leaving lots of space, and around the neck of the shirt.

Shape Your Bib

Shape the bib as you like. I chose to cut the corners, but you could leave them square, as well. Trim closer around the neck and narrow the join between the shirt and the neck.

Leave approximately half an inch around the edges for hem.

Place Bib Face-to-face With Backing, Sew, and Trim.

Place your bib printed side in on the backing.

Sew the backing on all sides except at the neck.

Trim after sewing.

Reverse and Trim

Turn your bib print-side out and trim the backing to meet the neck of the shirt.

Topstitch

Topstitch all around so the backing behaves itself. Stitch around where the backing meets the neck.

Open the Neck and Attach Snap

Cut open the neck near the shoulder. Hand-sew a snap onto the two halves. You may want to fold over part of the neck to reinforce the snap.
